"-The baby suits you dad. Said Kiara with a proud smile
-He is just so perfect. Whispered Robeert. Hey Little Luke, I'm your grandpa."
The baby fussed and opened his eyes. He had deep blue eyes, like all babies, but everyone knew they would last. All Spencers had blue eyes.
"-I think he's hungry. Robert said sadly, he knew he would have to give him up, but he didn't want to
-Can you give him his meal dad? Kiara asked. They are taking my vitals and stuff"
The nurse gave him the 4 oz bottle of formula and Robert smiled. He gently opened the baby's mouth and Little Luke started sucking on it immediately. Robert gently caressed his head, and made him burp soon after that. Not long later, Little Luke's eyes were closing and he was fussing. Robert placed the baby so his little head was on his heart, took his hand, feeling his little fingers closing around his thumb and cleared his throat. Kiara put a hand on Lucky's arm, to show him to stay quiet as Robert started to sing:
"Come stop your crying
It will be all right
Just take my hand
Hold it tight
I will protect you
From all around you
I will be here
Don't you cry
For one so small
You seem so strong
My arms will hold you
Keep you safe and warm
This bond between us
Can't be broken
I will be here
Don't you cry
Cause you'll be in my heart
Yes you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more
You'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
you'll be in my heart, always
When destiny calls you
You must be strong
I may not be with you
But you've got to hold on
They'll see in time,
I know
We'll show them together
Cause you'll be in my heart
Yes you'll be in my heart
From this day on
Now and forever more
You'll be in my heart
No matter what they say
you'll be in my heart, always
Just look over your shoulder
I'll be there, always"
Robert looked up and saw Kiara wipe a tear from her eye. He smiled at her and blew her a kiss. Lucky looked at his wife and gently passed an arm around her shoulders.
"-Are you hurt honey? Lucky asked softly
-No, I just hadn't heard that song sincce I was about 4 years old. This used to be my lullaby, too. Dad used to sing it to me every time I would go to sleep, or when I was crying"
Robert smiled, and continued to rock his grandson. Lucky and Kiara weren't saying anything, because they knew they would have Little Luke for the rest of their lives, they wanted Robert to feel like a part of the family-which he was- but they knew he didn't think so. He moved out of the house they were sharing and took a loft downtown. Kiara and Lucky had been there a couple of times. Robert had a bed, a couch, a table and chairs, a TV, a fridge and a stove. In the area that was his room he had his bed, his night table and a chest of drawers. Kiara thought her father must have been lonely, but he said the loft reminded him of the boxcar, where he spent the best summer of his life. The "kids" didn't want him to move out, but he said it was time for them to be on their own, with their family. He would still come by and have dinner with them, but it was time Kiara flew on her own. And at the time, it was scaring her to death. More so now, since Robert seemed to feel even more alone now that Little Luke was born.
Kiara saw him lift his head and she turned around to see Elizabeth enter the room, followed by Nikolas. Lucky moved to them but Robert talked first, showing his son it was OK.
"-Elizabeth, Nikolas, come and see this little piece of miracle"
Elizabeth slowly moved to Robert, and everyone could see she was uneasy. Nikolas gave Kiara the flowers and the giant teddy bear they had brought. Elizabeth looked at her grandson over Robert's shoulder and smiled.
"-Isn't he precious? Asked Robert with a proud voice
-He is a perfect little angel"
Robert was trying not to look at her over-sized stomach. She was now 7 months along. And it was showing a lot. Robert took his attention back on Little Luke, but he couldn't help but feel his heart break. The only biological child he had, he wasn't there when he was growing up. Now, Elizabeth was having her 4th child, and it wasn't his. It was his brother's, again. How long would he still have to endure the bleeding of his heart every time he thought about Elizabeth?
"-You must be very proud Lucky, congratulations. To you too Robert. Said Nikolas calmly. And Kiara, you truly make beautiful babies.
-Thank you Nikolas. Said Kiara, blushiing
-Yeah thank you Nikolas. Robert repeatted. Liz, want to hold him?"
Robert surprised everyone, and even more himself when he called her Liz. It truly showed that their previous relationship was over. That they were now strangers, acquaintances, sharing a family of in-laws, at best. While she was holding their grandson, he took his scrubs off and straightened his sweatshirt and jeans.
"-Ok guys, I'm outta here. I have some things to pick up, and I'll go make sure everything is ready at your house for Little Luke's arrival. I know he's 2 weeks early.
-Dad, are you sure? Kiara asked quietlly
-Yeah I am. Besides, I've been here foor 28 hours already, I think you guys need a break from Grandpa Robert
-Never dad. We are happy to have you hhere. Answered Lucky
-And I'm happy to be here, I just want to do this for you guys"
Robert kissed Kiara, gave a long embrace to Lucky, and went to Elizabeth. He slowly leaned down and kissed Little Luke's forehead, trying to ignore her sweet perfume.
"Good-bye Little Monkey. Robert said, giving him that nickname since he was with a herd of monkeys when he heard the news. I'll be back soon, be good for mommy"
Robert was sitting alone in Luke's room, looking around as the nursery was now complete. He was in the rocking chair, rocking himself, crying all the tears in his body. Once again he had kid himself. Why did he think that giving Elizabeth up would prevent him from hurting? When she was bending over his shoulder to look at Luke, he felt her pregnant stomach on his arm, and he wanted to die, just to stop the hurting. The baby had kicked, and he felt it. It was like the baby wanted to show him he was a loser. He lost everything in his life, and even an unborn child knew it.
The phone was ringing in another room, and he didn't pick it up. It wasn't his place to pick it up. The machine did, and he couldn't help but listen as Lucky's voice filled the house.
"-Dad, there is a problem here. Mom went into labor and they had to make her have the baby or the kid would've died. But now they are facing a bigger problem. The baby girl needs blood, but neither mom, nor Nikolas are her blood type. And Mom was asking for you"
