CHAPTER 31

Elizabeth was in her hospital room, doing something she hadn't done in a long time. She was praying. Praying that her daughter, Lucky's daughter, lived. Lucky's daughter. Knowing that made her heart full. Of tears, of joy, of fear. If she had known it was Lucky's, she would've told him, she would've left Nikolas. She stayed with the older brother because of the baby, thinking it wasn't fair to punish the child for her parents mistakes, but it had been Lucky's child all along. Would he believe her? She doubted it. Why would he? She broke his heart for nothing, and made him a stranger in his own town.

Elizabeth remembered their last meeting, in their son's room, and wiped the tears she had no right to cry. He told her, in his own words, that everything they had, everything they shared, was part of the past, like a beautiful fading dream. He always had been the only person respecting her wishes, calling her by her full name, never Liz, and certainly never Lizzie. Until today. She looked in his eyes and saw a part of him dying, as soon as the three letter word escaped his mouth. When her soul understood they had taken a step that could never be undone, it simply died. The cramp started at that moment, but she ignored them, and now her daughter's life was in jeopardy. She just hoped, at this point, that Lucky would answer her call for help.

Robert was still sitting in the rocking chair in the nursery. He was trying to process what he heard. Elizabeth's baby wasn't Nikolas' blood type. Nor her mother's. That could only mean one thing. His little girl was dying and needed his help. He got up and took his car to General Hospital, before he walked in maternity. He found Elizabeth's room and walked to her bed. She opened her eyes and he could see the flame of relief dancing in her eyes.

"-Where is she? He asked quietly
-She's in ICU. Elizabeth whispered. TThank you for coming
-My daughter needs me, I'm going to lett her down. I'll go give blood. He said as he walked to the door
-Lucky? Elizabeth asked quickly and hee turned around. I didn't know
-I know"

Robert ran down the corridor until he found the right room. A little tiny baby was tied to a lot of machines and in a jail of plexiglass.

"-Excuse me, I'm here to give blood, for my baby?"

The nurse took him into another room and he sat quietly as she draw the blood. She tried to talk to him, get a conversation going, but stopped when she saw he wasn't responding. The truth was, he wasn't even hearing her. He was thinking about the little human being fighting for her life, waiting for her father, who would become the strongest man in the world in her pure little eyes, to come and save her from the pain. And he would. For her, he would give his life. Every little drop of blood in his body would go for her if that was what she needed.

"All done. Said the nurse
-Is this gonna save her?"

The nurse started talking on medical terms and the only thing Robert understood was that her chances were good, but they had to keep her here until she was big enough to breath on her own. Robert thanked her and went back to Elizabeth's room to give her the good news. His heart was so full it was about to blow.

"-It's done , the doctor says there are good chances she will make it. He said with the biggest smile on his face.
-Thank you Lucky. She said quietly. II can't thank you enough for saving her
-She is my daughter, Elizabeth. And evven if she wasn't, she was in trouble, it was my duty to help her"

Robert sat on the chair next to her bed and gently took he hand. He smiled at her and her heart stopped. So many nights during the last few months she dreamed he would smile at her again like that. At her, not because of someone or something else, but because he was happy to be with her, like now.

"-Thank you for giving me a beautiful little angel, Elizabeth. He said quietly
-It was my pleasure. Literally. She ssaid with a smile and he laughed. Seriously, I didn't know she was yours, or I would've told you sooner, I swear
-I know. You aren't heartless, you wouuldn't have let Lani grow up thinking she was a Cassadine if she was a Spencer. I know you better than that.
-I was so scared you would think I hid this from you on purpose
-I know you wouldn't do that Elizabeth.. Don't worry about it
-Lani. Such a pretty name. Where did you get it?
-I have no idea, just popped into my heead just now, and I think it's pretty, don't you?
-Lani Spencer. I think it's really preetty"

Elizabeth took Robert's hand and gently kissed his fingertips.

"-I don't deserve your kindness. I acted like a total idiot. I acted like Sarah
-Hey, you were scared. I understand. -But you shouldn't. I don't deserve yoour friendship Lucky"

Uneasy with where he thought this conversation was going, not wanting to get his hopes up, Robert got up and said he would go tell Kiara and Lucky that Lani was fine and would get better. Elizabeth watched him leave with tears in her eyes. She knew he knew where she wanted to go with this, and he didn't want to hear it. She had messed up and lost him for good, and it was eating her alive.

Robert had been with Kiara and Lucky for a while when the same nurse came to see him.

"-Mr. Jackson? She asked quietly
-That's me
-There is a problem with baby Spencer -What? What is it?
-Well, Mrs. Cassadine left and we--"

> Robert didn't give her time to finish, he ran out the door and went to Elizabeth's room.

"-Where is she? She just gave birth, she can't be that far
-We found this on her pillow"

"To whom may concern,

I decided to leave the hospital. I'm not worthy as a friend, and certainly not as a mother. I couldn't even tell who the father of my baby was, and it almost killed her. I haven't decided yet where I am going, and I'd appreciate it if you didn't come for me until I am ready to come back. I don't know when it will be, but I will be back. Someday

I know this letter has no power on the law, but I would like Lani to be with her father until I come back, his name is on the birth certificate. I know she will be in good hands.

I'm sorry I hurt you all, and this will probably will, too, but I need time to sort things out and that is why I am leaving."

"-This isn't her. This is impossible!"

Robert started to look in the room to see anything that could help him find Elizabeth, but there was nothing left. Everything was gone. Robert felt desperation take over his body as he turned to the nurse.

"-Let me see my daughter
-That is another problem Mr. Jackson" No, it was impossible. His daughter couldn't have died. His lip started to tremble as he held his breath

"-She's now under the care of the United States Social Services.
-What? That's ridiculous, I'm her fathher, if something happens to one of the parent, the other take over
-But you are Robert Anthony Jackson, I saw your chart. Mrs. Cassadine signed the birth certificate and she wrote Lucas Lorenzo Spencer Junior as the father, sir"

The whole world came crashing down on him. his past was back to haunt him, once again.

"-I am Lucas Spencer. I just changed my name
-Lucas Spencer died.
-He died 17 years ago. Can't you see tthat he can't be dead and be the father of this child? I'll do a paternity test
-Without the mother's consent we can't.. You'll have to go to court. Sorry Sir"

The whole hospital heard the shout of pure pain coming out of Robert's mouth, as he cursed Elizabeth to break his heart, once again, by giving him a glimpse of paradise in his daughter's eyes only to take it away again.
