CHAPTER 27

Elizabeth was sitting in the living room, watching the twins play. They were so big! Last week they had celebrated their second birthday. Lucky was not home, he was working again for Jason. Elizabeth still couldn't believe he had give up University to work for the Organization, full time. They had a big fight about that last year and Lucky told Liz that if she wasn't happy with his choices, she just had to pack up and leave. She heard Les say mama, looked at him and realized there was a knock on the door. More like banging. She heard Jason on the other side of the door shouting her name. She got up and opened the door.

"-You got to get out of here, quick, Jason said, looking over his shoulder

-What? Why?

-Elizabeth don't ask questions! Take tthe kids and run

-What about Lucky? She asked while theey were taking the kids upstairs

-It's too late for Lucky, I'm sorry. TThere was an ambush and he was caught in the fire"

Elizabeth's legs bailed out on her and she fell on the floor. Lucky was dead? This couldn't be. Jason helped her back up, saying they didn't have time for this. She'd have to wait to mourn him, saying her children's life was more important now. Jason helped her take clothes and money, then he helped her to her car.

"-Now listen to me. You will go to the address I gave you. I don't want you to open the door to anyone and stay clear of the windows. As long as you don't hear me outside the door, you don't make a sound. I'm sorry for Lucky, I loved him like my brother"

She whispered Oh God and went on her way. Les was crying on the backseat, knowing something was terribly wrong. A couple of minutes later, Lori started crying too. Elizabeth was already crying and she didn't even try to comfort the kids. What was the use of running anyway? Lucky was gone. He was dead. She was alone. She angrily wiped the tears from her face. They were making her vision all blurry. She knew he would leave her like this. She just knew it. What was she supposed to do now? Jason told her the house he was sending her to had enough supplies to last three months, and that he would come and get her way before that, but she didn't want to go on. She just wanted to leave the kids at Laura's and join Lucky.

Laura! Thinking about her mother-in-law, tears started to fall down again. Who would tell her? Jason said to Elizabeth no contact with anyone. No phone calls, no letters, nothing. Moreno's men were trying to find Carly and Michael and Jason was afraid they'd want to find her and the twins. Nobody would know she was hiding. He would tell Laura that he sent Lucky and his family on a special assignment, and when everything was calmer, then everyone could mourn Lucky. Including her.

The road seemed long but she finally arrived at the cabin Jason was planning on hiding them in. The kids were sleeping so, carefully not to wake them up, she put them on the bed. There was only one big bed, only one room. The living room was also big, and the kitchen was small. She would go crazy in here! The twins would too. How did Jason expect her to keep two normal, two years old kids out of the yard for three months?

With the kids in bed Elizabeth sat down on the couch and finally let her desperation kick in. The tears were coming down her face and she was sobbing, holding her shoulders and rocking back and forth. She was saying his name again and again, remembering all the times he made her laugh. Home movies were flashing through her head, making the pain even more unbearable. The image that was coming back in her head was two years ago, when she gave birth to the twins, and he presented her the children, with a huge smile on his face and a twinkle in his eyes. He was so handsome, they were so happy. She remembered all the times they played, before they were even a couple. When they were on the run, the summer of her 15th year, when he got Boris for her, their first real date at the no name restaurant, their first kiss.

Elizabeth was sobbing uncontrollably. They had been together, inseparable, for 5 years now, how was she supposed to go on without him? He was her heart, her soul, her life. Every breath she took was like a knife in her heart.

"-Lucky, why did you leave me?"

The movies were still going on in her head. The smile he was having, playing Poker the day of the shower. She would give anything to have a picture of that smile. She would give anything to be able to hold him one more time. One last time. One last kiss. They had made love the night before and she was hoping to be pregnant. They were trying to have another child. Maybe this time it worked. It would be his last gift to her.

Elizabeth got up and started pacing the room. Tears were still coming down her face. She had the feeling they would never stop falling. She knew, no matter how long she was going to live, she would never love another man. No man could replace the gentleness, the tenderness, the love Lucky gave her and the children.

The twins would really miss him. He took time each day to play with them, and he was always home to kiss them good-night. He answered their questions with patience, read the same story again and again, without even trying to get the to change the book. If they made a house of blocks and Les would come and destroy it, Lucky would start it again with Lori, for the third or fourth times.

Les woke up at that moment, calling for Lucky. Elizabeth wiped the tears from her face and got her son. She sat him on her lap, and tried to tell him that they would have to stay here for a while and that daddy wouldn't be there, but all he was saying was;

"-Where daddy?

-I don't know baby, she answered, but II'd like him to be here with us too"

Les, feeling something was wrong, brushed a flock of hair out of her face, like he had seen his dad do so many times. Elizabeth's eyes filled up with water, but she didn't want to cry in front of her son. He would have to grow up soon enough, she wanted to let him be a kid for as long as he could.

Les got up and started to play with some of the toys Liz had brought with them. Elizabeth got up and looked at the window. Jason had told her to stay clear of them, but the Moreno guys couldn't have fins her that fast. It was a beautiful day outside. The sun was shining and the skies were blue. Elizabeth thought of Lucky's blue eyes, and tears were falling down again.

She saw a car pulling off on the driveway and she got away from the window. Couldn't be them already? She took Les and put him on the bed next to his sister. Lori woke up and started to cry. Elizabeth heard a soft knock on the door and she heard a man say he was their neighbor and wanted to welcome them. Elizabeth didn't say anything, but Lori was crying loud. The guy knocked harder, then banged on the door. She heard him open the door with a kick. Elizabeth looked at the twins and told them the stay on the bed. Les started to get up.

"-I mean it Lucas!"

Les looked at his mother and sat down. Just by the tone of her voice, he knew she wasn't kidding. Elizabeth went in the living room. A guy was standing in the middle of it, a gun in his hand.

"-Please don't hurt us! Elizabeth said

-I'm here to do a job lady. Now, eitheer you go get your kids and I kill you at the same time, or I kill you here and go for the kids after.

-Please let the kids be? Kill me but lleave the kids alone. Let me make a call and someone will pick them up but please don't kill them!

-No way lady. Now what do you do?"

Elizabeth closed her eyes. She didn't know what to do! She didn't care if she lived or died, but she didn't want the babies to die. She heard the guy taking his gun down.

"-No lady look at me. If you look at me while I kill you, I swear I will leave the babies alone"

Elizabeth sighed took the courage she had in her to lift her face, and, while opening her eyes, she said;

"-Please don't hurt me"

Elizabeth looked at the man and was stunned to see Lucky looking back at her.

"-Hurt you? Elizabeth I just wanted you to wake up"
