"-What's so funny? He said with his voice still asleep
-You are, she answered. You looked likke you spent the night on the lawn.
-Well, you took all the place and all tthe blankets, I stayed up half the night frozen and couldn't sleep due to lack of space. He answered"
He got up, kissed her on the cheek and went to the bathroom. When he got out he was looking awake, he even was dressed. Once refreshed he took her in his arms and kissed her.
"-Last night was incredible, she said in a laugh
-Go get dressed while I make the bed, wwe have a lot to do today.
-Like what?
-Find you an apartment maybe? You don''t plan on spending the year in my dorm room do you?
-Good point Spencer!"
She went in the bathroom, soon enough to miss the punch that was coming her way. She was thinking about something but didn't want to say anything yet. She would talk to Lucky about it when she found her apartment. When she opened the bathroom door, he was sitting on the bed he just made, looking like he was miles away.
"-Let's go, she said to him
-What? Oh sure"
First of all, they went and buy the morning paper, then to a little restaurant to get some breakfast. Liz was looking at the ads, while he was looking at her. Still, after spending the night in the same bed, he couldn't believe she came back to him. She even said she loved him. The only thing he could think about was asking her to marry him again. But he knew she would panic again. At least she was here with him.
"-Hey check out this one: Two rooms, ideal for student, low rent, just been repainted, furniture already in. That would be perfect for me.
-Well, let's call to see if he can showw it to us today."
The appointment was in fifteen minutes. It was only three blocks away from Lucky's dorm room. The guy renting was a professor, teaching at the University. He told Lucky he would be in one of his class, after Lucky told him his major. He reminded Liz of Mr. Murty
"-I know a two room is small, more so for a couple, he said while he opened the door, but the living, who is also the bedroom, has a big window. The rooms are kinda big, but you can see for yourself."
Liz fell in love with the apartment. It was all painted in white, and she was already imagining the mural she could paint, if Mr. Wagner accepted. In the kitchen there was a refrigerator, a stove, a table and three chairs. The bedroom had two Chest of drawers, a desk and a kind size bed frame.
"-There is no mattress, on the frame, you'd have to buy one. I don't rent mattresses.
-That's no problem Mr. Wagner. How mucch you ask for this place?
-Well, I know you guys are student, so I'll lower the rent to 175$ per month. This include electricity, water and heat.
-175$??? Elizabeth said
-Is that too much, I'm sorry, I can't gget any lower, as much as I like you guys
-No this is perfect! I'm kind of an arrtist, would you mind if I painted these walls?
-Of course not. You can do whatever yoou want on these walls.
-Mr. Wagner, do you mind if we talked aabout it in the hall? Asked Lucky
-No, talk about it here, I'll wait in tthe hall."
Elizabeth was smiling, obviously excited about this place. She was turning around and looking at everything. She took Lucky's hands in hers and said;
"-What do you think of this place?
-I think it's perfect for you. Big enoough not to feel trapped, small enough to feel cozy and affordable.
-I know it's perfect for me, but what aabout for us?
-Us?
-Lucky, I want you to move in with me. Wouldn't it be great?
-Elizabeth, as much as I love you, I caan't spend my school year sleeping on the floor you know
-You wouldn't have to sleep on the flooor. The bed would be big enough for both of us. What do you say?
-Elizabeth, I don't think you are readyy for this. Don't get me wrong, I would love to live with you, but last night was just one night. What will happen if you get scared? My dorm room will be given to somebody else.
-Lucky please? I really want to do thiis. I wanna live with you. If you are afraid I'll get scared, will get twin beds and ask Mr. Wagner to take the frame elsewhere.
-Twin beds? I could live with that. BBut what will Mrs. Hardy say about that?
-What she doesn't know can't hurt her!""
She kissed him tenderly, and called Mr. Wagner back in. She told him they would take it, but they wouldn't need the bed frame. Lucky signed the lease, and they went to buy stuff they needed. Liz was looking at king sized beds, but Lucky had his heart set on twin beds. He was sure that always being in the same bed would put pressure on her, and he didn't want that.
He paid for the stuff, and Elizabeth would pay him back as soon as Audrey sent her the money. They went to his dorm, to tell the supervisor he was leaving, and get the money for the rest of the month back. Greg was sad to see them leave, but Lucky gave him is new address, so he can come by sometimes. They made three trips to get all of his and her things. The beds were arriving later that afternoon. Liz put the clothes in the drawers, arranging the bedroom, while Lucky was washing the dishes, pots and pans. Liz started laughing and Lucky come in the bedroom, with a dish cloth to wipe his hands.
"-What's so funny? He asked, leaning against the wall
-This! Can you believe this is our firrst apartment? We look like a married couple! The woman organizing the room, while the man washes the dishes.
-So? What do you have against married couples? He asked with a smile
-Nothing Mr. Spencer, I hope to be one myself one day
-A married couple? Don't you have to bbe two for that?
-Oh shut up and wash your dishes!"
He went back in the kitchen, laughing. For the first time in his life he felt at home. Happiness was the best thing he ever tasted, and most of all, it was with Elizabeth.
After he finished cleaning up the kitchen, he went into the bedroom and found Elizabeth sitting down, reading a book. He sat next to her and kissed her cheek. She smiled at him and put her head on his shoulder. They stayed like that a while, not saying anything, just enjoying each other's company. They went through so much together that they didn't have to talk to feel at ease, just being there was enough.
The doorbell rang and Lucky opened the door. It was the delivery guys from the store. While Lucky put the beds up, Elizabeth folded the towels and sheets, put the stuff they bought in the bathroom, put the shampoo, soaps, and little stuff under the bathroom sink. Together they made their beds, and backed away to see the final impression.
"-Nah, I don't like it like that, Elizabeth said after a while"
She went and pushed her bed next to Lucky's. His bed was against the wall, and she pushed her all the way to his. Lucky looked at her and said;
"-I thought the whole idea of twin beds was to sleep separated.
-No, the whole idea was to be able to ssleep separated if I get scared.
-Yeah and now I'll fall in the crack beetween the beds
-Then you just have to fall on the otheer side!"
She started laughing and got away from him, because he put his fists up like he wanted to fight. She did the same and they started boxing. After a couple of good punches, Elizabeth took Lucky in her arms and started kissing him. He was playing with her hands, trying to stop her from putting them around his neck. They were smiling while kissing, and Lucky fell on the bed, while Elizabeth fell on him. He stopped kissing her, thinking she might wanted to get up, but she continued kissing him. He put his arms around her back, holding her closer to him.
Heat started raising in the room, as the kisses became more passionate. Lucky was kissing her on her cheek, neck, near her earlobe, and back to her mouth. She was playing in his hair, kissing him back. His hands were going up and down on her side, dying to touch her. He was taking good care not to scare her off, so he was gentle, tender, loving.
"-Beautiful? Weren't we supposed to go grocery shopping once we received the beds? He said"
She understood he went it was time to stop, and she backed off. He got up, helped her up, and held her close to him. His heart was racing a hundred miles a minute. He went to get his coat, helped her put hers on, and they went shopping.
While they were at the grocery store, Lucky met a girl in one of his classes. She walked up to him and started talking. Elizabeth was a couple of steps farther, and she felt a little tickling of jealousy in her spine. She knew it was stupid, because Lucky loved her, not anyone else, but at that moment she felt that he might be tempted to look elsewhere, to get what she couldn't give him.
She stayed away while he was talking to her, she didn't want to intrude, but she heard him say;
"-Wait a second, I'd like you to meet my girl, Elizabeth?"
Elizabeth started to walk towards them, with a smile on her face. The truth was, she didn't like the way that girl was looking at Lucky, and Liz wanted to poke her eyes out.
"-Elizabeth, I'd like you to meet Marysa, she's in my sociology class. Marysa, meet Elizabeth.
-Hi Said Marysa
-Hi.
-You don't know how lucky you are to haave snatched Lucas like that. A lot of girls here are green with envy, said Marysa
-Yeah I'm sure, but I know how lucky I am thank you."
Marysa said good-bye and left. Elizabeth looked at Lucky and said;
"-Lucas? Since when do people call you Lucas?
-She doesn't like "Lucky" and she askedd me if she could call me Lucas and I said yes. What's the big deal?
-Nothing. Come on, let's go"
Lucky knew she was mad, but he didn't know why. He followed her to the cash register, and they went home. She nearly said two words to him. She put the groceries away, and started diner. Lucky was sitting at the kitchen table, trying to read the paper, but he could only think about the change that happened in his girl. He didn't understand it, and she didn't want to talk about it.
After diner, she went to take a shower and put her pj's on. She sat on the bed, and started to read. Lucky sat next to her, took the book out of her hands, and looked at her straight in the eyes. Her eyes were full of tears. Lucky took her hand and smiled at her.
"-Wanna talk about it?
-What's to talk about?
-Well, maybe you could start by tellingg me why you've been acting this way since we came home.
-Well, I just realized something that'ss all.
-Like what?
-Like it's not fair for me to have askeed you to move in with me. And that it's not fair for me to have pushed to beds together, and that's it's not fair of me to kiss you like I do and then make you stop, and that it's not fair to ask you to sleep in the same bed as I do, ask you to hold me close, and the ignore the feelings you are having. I'm not ready to give myself to you, and you deserve it. One day you'll get tired of waiting and you'll go see someone like Marysa, to get your needs answered. What am I supposed to do then?
-Baby, he said, taking her in his arms,, I will never go see anyone but you. I don't want to, I don't need to. I love you, and I don't even care even if we spend the next ten years without even kissing, as long as you are with me, I have everything I need.
-You say that now
-And I will say it tomorrow, and the daay after that, and the week after that, and the year after that. No matter how long it takes, I will be here for you. Always.
-I love you
-I love you too"
They went to bed not long after that, just holding each other close. Elizabeth knew he was right. He would never cheat on her. Sliding slowly in her dream, she whispered;
"-I love you so much Lucky"
