Here's an update on John as of May 2004
|
There is a light at the end of the tunnel, |
Two years ago we moved to West Virginia. It
was something that we were not
it was the right thing to do. Taking the boys away
from the only place they
ever knew and moving them to a place that they were not use to. But
we have all
adapted quite well. John was the one we were really worried about.
It meant we
had to find a new doctor, put him in a new school, no friends(which he really
only had two in Ohio), a new house, do I need to say any more?
But to our surprise, the doctor we found was great. He didn't like
the fact that
he was on seven (7) different medications. Haldol, Klonipin, Cogentin,
Clonidin,
plus 3 more we can't remember and he took them 3 x's a day. But trust
me when
I say he was. He is now only
taking one medication, Orap, once a day and is
doing great. Oh, he still has a vocal tick every now and then, but
he is
teaching himself how to make another part of his body move (where one
would not see) to over ride the other tick. For instance, I noticed
his stomach
muscles moving, instead of his head. But under a shirt one would not
notice it.
School was a big worry for us. But since the new medication, well....let's
be nice.
He is passing, which is a lot better than he was before and he is actually
learning (Thanks to his teachers!!!). For instance, a lot less homework,
uses his time more wisely while in school, and is actually bringing home
A's
on some of his papers. (We are still working on A's on the report
card.)
Friends was not something John had a lot of in Ohio. I guess since
the kids
grew up with him they knew a little more than they should. But John
has
friends calling him almost every day. Oh, he still got into fights
at first, you know
the new kid in school thing. But would you believe that him and that
boy are
friends now. Who would have believed that.
Although John tried to fit in with his age group, he was still immature.
He liked
playing with younger kids then his own age, and their toys too. But
he has
matured. He is now a handsome young man, who just started shaving
this
past Christmas, has the deep voice that some people get mixed up with his
dad.
But the thing that gets me, I am no longer tall to him, he towers over me
at
almost 6 foot. He also loves to eat!!!!, what teen ager don't huh?
Let me just say that, with Jesus in our heart and a lot of patience
John is now a normal teen ager.
But remember Tourette Syndrome in NOT a
disease!!!!
