29 April 2002                                    Steve Phelps AG3  1960-61

My name is Steve Phelps and I served aboard the Tracer from Jan 1960 to
Jan 1961. I was one of the "airdales" who let those damn balloons go on the
fantail.

My tour aboard the Tracer was my last on active duty, after which I
returned to my home in Brooklyn, NY.  In hindsight, my year on the Tracer was
definitely my best in the Navy.

I had several good friends on the ship and, much to my sorrow didn't maintain contact with any of them. Of the shipmates you have located, the only name I recognize is IC2
Itoney.  After leaving the Navy, I worked, graduated from Penn State and retired in 1995 from the Defense Intellgence Agency. I have a great retirement job, school bus driver in Vienna, Va.

I would really like to keep in touch and kept abreast of news.  Of the shipmates located, I only recognize Itoney, IC2   My best friends aboard were "Terry" Tucker from Texas and Mikkelson who was from Concord, CA I think. AG3 Leonardo Coquia was head of the AG shack. He
made AG2 and was from Bagio City in the Philipines.

Look forward to hearing from you,
Steve Phelps, AG3

Sharon Ray reports in for her father, Russell McCoy, RM3, aboard the ship in 1958-1959.  Russell was aboard the ship when it went to sea as the USS Interupter AGR-15 and came back to port as the USS Tracer AGR-15.  The ship held a contest to design a logo for the new USS Tracer AGR-15.  McCoy designed the logo and received $100 for his accomplishment.  The logo can be seen on the "Home Page".and below.

LTJG Doug Wales he should be able to fill you in on a good story.  On a windless day off Northern California we had a sailing yacht cross our station. They had participated in a race from LA to Honolulu and were on their way home to San Francisco.  The yacht was virtually becalmed and the skipper invited them aboard for a visit -  Doug Wales sailed their yacht while they were on the Tracer  They got a tour of the ship, a delicious meal and, best of all for the ladies, a hot shower.  CS1 Rex Buzzard provided them with enough fresh provisions to get them back to San Francisco.  I can't remember the name of the yacht but I'm sure Doug would remember.  It was a nice break for them and for our crew too.
