The USS Tracer AGR-15 was the pinnacle of my Naval career.  This was definitely the best duty station I ever had.

I Plan to be at the reunion next year in Pensacola..

Editor's Note:   To hear these kind words from the only living CO we have been able to locate sure
makes me feel lucky to be with him at that duty station during my four year stint  in the Navy.

Word came from the Chief's Club that some top level Department of Defense person was going to inspect the barricks at Hunter's Point where the Tracer crew was housed during decommissioning in 1965.  OOD George Harington, LTJG called the entire crew back to prepare the barricks for inspection.   Most of them made it back and spent the night painting, scrubbing, sweeping the dingy old barricks..   The next morning Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara inspected the space and recommended to close this location.   Thus the  hard work was in vain.

Hi, my name is Albert J. Greenwalt. I was aboard the USS Tracer from April 1964 till Oct. 1964.I had a motorcycle accident Oct. 24th 1964. I was transported to Oakknoll Naval Hospital. I was given a medical discharge Nov.9th 1965.I want to THANK YOU for this website of the Tracer. The pics in here brought back some great memory's. My main job on board was scullery duty (not a fun job,but i sure ate good). I was on board when we won the mess deck award. I helped clean the mess decks to get that award. I was very proud. In the eating area was a large picture of emerald bay. Emerald bay is located at Lake Tahoe. I worked with a guy who was from Lake Tahoe. His name was DON BRADLY.His uncle was half owner of the Milton & Bradly Toy Company. Don was naval reserve. Our ship was the only ship (that i know of ) that had it's own radio station" Clear Channel 15". I did help a albatross bird one time when it got hooked on my fishing hook. The guy that was helping me let go of it's wings and it slaped the stuffing out of me before i got the hook out of it's wing.If that sailor was taking a hook out of that bird than that sailor was me. My wife and children seem to think that sailor looks like me. I always carried my keys on my belt loop and still do to this day. The 3"50 i was stationed on was mount 31, up forward at the bow. John L. Hansen (we were in boot camp together) was at mount 32, fantail. THANK YOU for letting me relive those days. Your fellow shipmate

Thanks Al for your comments sent to me via e-mail..  This is the sort of essay we would like to get from all former shipmates that visit the website.  We all appreciate your thoughts on your time aboard the Tracer almost 40 years ago.
