GESTATIONAL DIABETES
If you've found yourself on this page, then chances are you've failed the evil glucose test. Don't worry. You're not the only one, it's not the end of the world, and it's not a permanent condition. It is a very scary thing though especially if this is your first child. Read further and I hope the information given here will help.
Gestational Diabetes (GD) occurs when the mother's body doesn't make enough insulin for both her and her baby. If GD is diagnosed, then the pregnancy is usually categorized as "high risk" and the baby is closely monitored. Babies born to GD mothers are generally larger and risk being born hypoglycemic.
GD can be controlled by diet, but it takes determination and commitment. The general diet follwed by gestational diabetics is very limited sugars and carbohydrates. If blood sugar levels are not maintained, then insulin will probaby be prescribed.
Mind you, I am NOT a doctor. I'm only sharing what I've learned through my first pregnancy. I'm hoping that maybe this information will ease someone's fears through an incredibly confusing time. I know myself that I was terribly scared and couldn't find help anywhere. Good luck to all and I hope this page helps.
