| Is there ground fighting in Wing Chun ?, often asked, yet the answer is pretty simple, Wing Chun was developed as a effective combat art, it would be pretty hard to believe that the past masters overlooked something as fundamental as "what to do if I find myself on the floor !" the reason there is no 'ground fighting' form is the same as why there is no 'being attacked while sitting in a chair form', or 'being attacked while standing on 1 leg and reading a book' form in Wing Chun we adapt to the situation we are pressented with, applying principles and concepts to techniques that are the most efffective at that moment. "Rules of ground fighting" #1 DONT GO DOWN However if you find your assailant doesn't play by any rules, heres a couple of pointers you may care to remember. All fights are serious, finding yourself on the ground however, makes it one of the most serrious of scenarios. Don't be tempted to try and wrestle around on the floor, apply the same techniques and principles, that you would if you had found yourself in a bear hug, or back to the wall etc., Get up as soon as you can, pretty basic I know, but don't get tempted to try to strangle the guy out, just because you have got the better of him, ( it's normally at this point his mates appear and practise "the river dance" on your head) getting the sole of your foot/ feet flat on the floor, aids your techniques, and will help in propelling you back up to a standing position Remember the techiques and target areas often banned or forbidden from many so called ' no rules' ground fighting competitions, are the very ones that tend to be the most effective (hence their being banned ! ) it will only be your own moral constraints that dictate their use (or lack of) the 'ground'- don't fight ON it, or you may just end up IN it |
