Original Sin - What was the average mentality of Adam and Eve in the garden when they were first created. Say about three years old. What happens when you put a three year old in a room full of all the coolest toys with a bowl of candy in the middle? You tell them they can play with any of the toys they want but DON'T EAT THE CANDY!!!! Any parent can answer this.
They would eat the candy as soon as you left.
Why?
Adam and Eve were true innocents. They had no concept of right or wrong because they had never experienced retribution. They had no concept of consequence. Children don't do something because they are TOLD not to. They do it because they fear the consequences.
God is omnipotent and omniscient. HE HAD TO KNOW THEY WERE GOING TO EAT THE FRUIT!!!! In order to truly have free will you must make decisions. He couldn't give them free will. Adam and Eve had to decide to have it.
So. The story goes they ate the fruit and God came back down to visit.
What happened when God showed up?
THEY HID BECAUSE THEY WERE ASHAMED OF THEIR BODIES!
The same bodies God had created for them in HIS OWN IMAGE. In a round about way, they just told god that they were ashamed of Him.
THAT'S what I believe the original sin was. Not that they had eaten the fruit but that they hid. Think about all the neurosis that surround our appearance. And then society AND religion reinforces it. Aren't we saying that we are STILL ashamed of God?
