"Ovata" "The repetition of oval forms suits the pose and celebrates aspects of the feminine, hence the title 'Ovata'. The triangular shape in the pose is also has a feminine reference (cf. Judy Chicago's 'Dinner Party'). The approach used in this drawing is quite characteristic in expressive work of the 1980's and early 90's "The evolution of the approach goes back to college years. It is now a cohesion of a few different ways of thinking about the figure. "It is a play between 'the diagramic' and 'the descriptive'. This is undercut by a somewhat 'Post-Modern' leaning towards humour as a credible component in serious art. Sometimes features like the 'balls' of the shoulders are only subtly present in the observed form, but are drawn as definite shapes even though no clear countours may have been seen. "A bottom line to this present way to form images is saying to myself, 'you can see, or pick up, some pretty funny things in figures at times'. "This approach materialised using a 'non- Fine-Art' medium - a 0.5mm push pencil. I am currently developing the same approach using brush and ink, taking advantage of the fluid brush line, but not being adverse to allowing the brush line to appear as though it has been created with a pen and ink." - Alan Tulloch |
