Meanings Behind Meaning can take up residence in a drawing through different means. The Renaissance tradition gave great weight to the pose. It is not just that a pose connects with the body/emotion experiences of the viewer. The poses that evolved within the Renaissance were deliberately theatrical, sometimes 'over acted'. Poses developed into an inner language that connected real poses, theatrical posing and the tradition of poses in previous artworks. Michelangelo's "Creation of Adam" did not simply happen. It is possible to track a progression of representations by other artists from God holding Adam's head in his hands, until there is a total hands-off situation in Michelangelo's version. Likewise Adam changes from a lifeless, dependant stick to being a relaxed but potent being with rising/rousing independence. Note Adam's right arm that is 'set' like a compressed spring. Where metaphor (a spring) is a deliberate part of a pose, another means to develop meaning has been engaged. In "Ovata" (adjacent) there is a 'body compression' not unlike Michelangelo's Adam but metaphor is evoked in a different way in this drawing. In this case, metaphor is created through adaption of a representational technique. |
