This is my first appearance in a magazine rather than an anthology, and entirely unplanned; I stumbled onto the magazine's call of submissions while looking for something else, happened to have a sci-fi western in me electronic chest o' textual goodies, and voila! The magazine is, as you may divine from the name and subtitle, devoted to the generic blend of science-fiction and the western; and for those with good memories, this isn't my first sci-fi rodeo either: check out Infinity-Bar Ranch.
"The Great Genome Robbery" is a different sort of beast than that, however. In the dusty part of a dusty century, a group of cowboys awake to find part of their herd missing--rustled, no doubt. But wben Winston and Durham set out in pursuit, it soon becomes evident that these are no ordinary thieves: the trail outright vanishes for long stretches of time, and no matter how hard they ride, they just can't seem to catch up. Teaming up with a inexperienced city-slicker and a local Indian guide, their quest takes them into the forests of the Pacific Cascades, where ghostly shapes flicker in the corner of the eye... |
