Falersa made a goofy face at her brother from her seat beside him and tried desperately to suppress her giggles when he turned to look at her and she immediately turned back to her work. He frowned and returned to the text he was studying. Falersa stuck her tongue out at him then went back to focussing on her studies.

Studying was so ridiculous for her. She was supposed to be studying the properties of numbweed and fellis but had no need to. She’d known their properties since she could speak them. Her mother had been a Master Healer and little Falersa had taken much delight in helping her mother tend the sick and injured in their hold.

Her twin brother Falersin was not as adept in his knowledge however and Falersa always had to help him along. They had been at the Healer Hall for quite some time now and Falersa began to wonder if her brother would ever really figure it out.

Falersin sighed in exasperation and slammed the book shut. Falersa looked at him in question and he merely scowled.

“What?” she asked, closing her own book more gently.

“I’m sick of this! I’m never going to learn it all in time for our test tomorrow,” he complained, getting up to pace around the room. Falersa frowned, not sure what to say to cheer him up.

The two of them were due to take their journeyman test tomorrow; that was what they were studying for. Falersin kicked the bed in his frustration and Falersa snapped at him.

“Hey! Don’t take your anger out on my bed!”

“Well, I’ve got to take it out on something!” he yelled back at her, then visibly stopped himself and took a forced deep breath. “I’m sorry, sis. I’m just really worried about that test tomorrow.”

“I am too,” she replied as he resumed his seat next to her and reopened the book. “I’m terrified I won’t pass.”

“You’ll pass,” Falersin replied with a somewhat disgusted sigh, “you always pass.”

Falersa grinned at him, trying to lighten the mood. “I do, don’t I?”

Falersin scowled at her and shoved her out of her chair. Falersa had not been expecting a physical attack and tumbled onto the floor with such an expression of shock on her face that her brother couldn’t help but laugh. “That’s what you get for lording your knowledge over me!”

“Oh yeah? Well, you may have caught me off guard that time, but you just wait!” she said getting up and righting her chair, brushing the dust off her shirts as she looked at him from the corner of one narrowed eye.

Falersin just chuckled and turned back to his book. Falersa sighed and leaned on the back of her chair, looking around the room.

“I’m bored and sick of studying,” she thought aloud then focussed on her brother. “Want to get something to eat?”

Falersin wavered for a moment; he really needed to keep studying, but a snack would help him focus better. He weighed the options, staring at the page in front of him as his sister waited for his reply. The words on the page didn’t really make sense and he finally nodded his head. “Yeah, I need a break, let’s go.”
