The Dice Man |
Luke Rhinehart, a psychiatrist, has a revelation one day. If god is omnipresent and is always good, then people should be able to live their lives in accordance to the toss of a die. He starts out small, letting the die decide what sort of food he will eat or what TV show to watch, but it gradually envelopes his entire personality, and what is left is a human being divorced from the consequences of his own actions. I found the book to be long winded at times but as the toss of the die influenced the manner in which the book was actually written, you have to allow for unorthodox twists. |
Fahrenheit 451 |
Heart Of Darkness |
Fahrenheit 451 is a novel of prophetic qualities. Imagine a world where we care more about our televised surrogate families and friends than we do for our real life neighbours and fellow human beings. Imagine a world that has forgotten how to read, how to analyse, how to think for itself, where books are banned and firemen are now the ones who light the fires. The future is here and the vision was pretty accurate. |

Yes, this is the book that inspired that masterpiece of moviemaking, Apocolypse, Now. It is the tale of the mercenary Marlow journeying up the congo river in search of a man named Kurtz. The journey also finds Marlow searching himself for meaning behind his beliefs and values. The building of intensity in the writing that leads up to the famous utterance,"The horror! The horror!" is as intoxicating as a tribal dance. One to read with red wine. |

The original 'Survivor' was a group of posh British schoolboys jettisoned onto an island paradise to fend for themselves while the rest of the world got on with a war. This book is a speculative social experiment that unmask the darker side of human nature that emerges when the template of civilisation is removed from our decision making priorities. While he's at it, Golding also explores a dozen or so other themes, which is why this book is among my favourites. |
