The Ghost Town at Sundown Hannah Robinson Tower South Kingstown, Rhode Island |
Difficulty: Very easy and perfect for children and sightseers. This is a tall tower at the intersection of Rts 1 and 138 with a "Park n Ride" and a pocket sized park attached. It is built on the top of a hill leading up from Narragansett Bay and the Narrow River. It is one of the most recognizable South County Landmarks, probably second only to the Coast Guard House. It is also the reason why this section of Rte 1 is known as Tower Hill Road. Note that this is also the intersection referenced in Viking Ships at Sunrise. The combination of these two easy letterboxes is perfect for those trying to get outdoors and keep young children interested without having to do much hiking or to impress out of town visitors with the view. Clue difficulty: Brush up on your math and observation skills but this is as easy or difficult as you want to make it. Background: The Hannah Robinson Tower is a very tall tower with unparalleled views east towards Narragansett Bay, as well as Jamestown and Aquidneck islands. We planted the box just before sunset and can attest to the beauty of the sun setting over the woods and hills of South County to the west. Its log construction is more reminiscent of Ft Robinson than South County. For some reason it holds an irresistable attraction for kids who like to climb up and down its many (how many?) steps over and over. I try to limit my kids to 3 ascents per visit. It is also an ideal spot for running into people from all over the US or that you grew up next door to but haven't seen in 15 years. The rather small park attached to it is not particularly well used or maintained. It has a myriad of little paths zigzagging through it, including one that leads to a ledge overlooking the bay. Things to look for from the top of the tower: A = # of towers = _____ B = # of legs supporting the tower = _____ C = # of steps to the top (including landings) = _____ D = # of landings = _____ E = # of bridges that you can see crossing Narragansett Bay = _____ F = # of poles coming down from the roof as support = _____ G = # of tall telephone antenna towers = _____ H = # of car dealerships = _____ I = level of interest in most people in solving math problems = _____ And now for the hunt: Find the NW corner of the tower. Proceed on the path at a heading of I . Go through H stone walls. At the next 'Y' intersection take the path at F . The next intersection you come to will be a E prong fork. The prong heading EHI will lead to a bench hidden under trees. Take the prong heading C+D+F instead. Go through B-E stone walls. Take GD paces to the next "Y". Take the trail heading Dx(C+B) . Take A+B+F paces at EC to a shed sized glacial erratic. From the SW corner of the erratic take D+E steps at GC to find the box. Please hide the box again carefully as this can be a teenage hangout.
