Note - Though this box has been reported missing several times is has never been lost (maybe shoved WAY under the rock, though). Difficulty - Easy distance, a half mile round trip, but a scramble up a rock that requires 3 points. Extra caution should be taken in snowy and/or icy weather. Pettaquamscutt Rock is a local Indian landmark. It is believed that it is the "treaty rock" where Roger Williams and William Coddington probably completed the purchase of Providence and Aquidneck from in 1638 from the Narragansetts. In 1658 it was bought from the Narragansetts in 1658 by a group of settlers. Today it is part of a town park with a small playground and is used frequently by local climbers brushing up on their technique. Directions - From 138 southbound. At the stop light where Rt 138 intersects Rt 1 cross over and continue towards the bay. At the bottom of the hill take a right on Middlebridge. The park is just over a mile down on your right. From the parking lot head towards the basketball court. You will see a path leading back to the rock. There are several trails up to the top of the rock. Take one to the right. The farther right you stay the easier it is to climb the rock. Once you reach the top go to the edge and admire the view of the Narrow River. A thousand years ago you might have even been able to see Leif Erickson's ship off in the distance (if he had come this far south). After enjoying the vista turn around and take 24 paces at 290o to the tallest evergreen around. Unfortunately it has recently died from girdling but it is still standing. From the tree take 14 paces at 240o to find the box under the far side of a piece of glacial erratica. The easiest way down from there is to head to the back of the rock and follow edge down to the right. This letterbox is in the same area and can easily be done with Ghost Town at Sundown.
