Fitted new LH carb, and was VERY careful about doing up the inlet-stub nuts. Took the bike for a ride to warm it up, then went through the carb tuning sequence. But the tick-over is all over the place – very hard to get the engine idle consistent enough for the CarbMate to show “in balance”. Yet these are brand-new carbs, no distortion, and no flange air leaks! One clue: the engine runs better with the inlet balance hose in place than it does with the CarbMate hoses in place. Also: the throttle action feels very stiff and notchy. JB Nicholson does say that one source of inconsistent idle is a throttle cable too stiff for the slide return springs. Shall I try a new cable next? Before that, I shall thoroughly oil this one again. |
