Late in the afternoon Penelope Layne walked into the “18th Street Coffee House”, as she did everyday after work. Standing behind the counter was Laurana Cook, with her long black hair tied back. She prepared herself a hot chocolate. “Hi Penny.” She greeted her. “Hey.” Penny answered and sat down. They continued talking about their day at work like usual. : Ding: The clock over the bank across the street struck eight o’clock. “See you tomorrow.” Penny said on her way out of the coffee house. As Penny walked to her small apartment that she lived in with her father she began to think deeply about her life. Why she never moved out, Nick, her best friend had offered the guest room at his place many times, ye she’d always refuse. She continued to think in her trance until she realized that someone was talking to her. “Pen, Penny…yo! Layne!” The person said. “Huh, oh, hi.” She said realizing she had bumped into Nick. “I was just at your house. Your dad is pissed that you’re not home.” Nick said brushing the hair out of Penny’s face. “Can I come to your place tonight?” Penny asked her best friend. “Sure, meet me there in an half hour, I’ll get a pizza.” Nick said walking away. “Alright.” Penny agreed. She went upstairs to grab some clothes and then go to Nick’s house. Meanwhile, back at the coffee house, Laurana was finishing up closing the store getting ready to go back to her dorm alone. She had broken up with her boyfriend Cale after he began to get abusive and controlling. She was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn’t realize Howie was standing right in front of her. “Hey Laurana, I know how you have been lonely since you broke up with Cale, so I thought you needed a night on the town.” Howie said pulling Laurana towards his car. Laurana just followed her best friend. She knew she couldn’t change his mind. He was right though; she had been a loner for a while now. Howie drove to ‘Stage Left’ in hopes of cheering his friend up. Little did Laurana know but Howie had someone waiting there to meet her and maybe be her new beau. “Brian Littrell.” Howie’s friend introduced himself to Laurana. “Laurana Cook.” She said shaking his hand. “That is a beautiful name, for a beautiful girl.” Brian said in his gentlemanly sort of way. Hearing it all before Laurana simply nodded and ordered a drink. ~Back To Penny~ She slowly walked up the stairs, hoping her father was either asleep or passed out, but he wasn’t. He was waiting for her at the door. He yelled, he screamed, she shut her eyes and silently cried to herself. “I’m leaving dad.” Penny simply said. She continued to walk down the narrow hallway to her room. Wiping her tears, Penny tossed some clothes into a duffle bag and walked back out of the apartment not once looking back at her father. “You better not be going to see one of those colored bastards.” He yelled after her Penny went over to Nick’s house with tears in her eyes. She knew it was just the alcohol talking when her father screamed at her but it still hurt, a lot. Penny began to have a flashback to when she was engaged to a Latino man. ~Flashback~ “But I love him dad, we’re getting married.” “You can’t love him. Foreigners and colors don’t need love, they need punishment!” He yelled. “No daddy.” Penny screamed back a slap against her face echoed inside of her. Penny began to cry even harder, she ran faster hoping to get to Nick’s faster. She tripped, her knees and hands slamming against the pavement. Not getting up, Penny sat there trembling. “Why me?” She thought to herself. “Are you all right? That was a pretty hard fall.” A man’s voice said to Penny as he held out his hand. “I’m a all right thanks.” Penny said as he helped her to her feet. Penny began to walk away when the man that had helped her spoke again, “Won’t you even tell me your name?” He asked. “Penelope… Penny Layne.” She told him. “You mean like the song?” “Yeah, I was named after the Beatles song.” Penny laughed. “Cool, I’m Mark Andrews by the way.” The man introduced himself. “Hello Mark Andrews.” Penny joked still wiping the tears from her cheeks. “You want to go get some coffee?” Mark asked. “Actually, yeah, But I was on my way over to Nick’s house.” Penny said. “Oh, all right, maybe some other time.” Mark said disappointed. “Yeah, maybe.” Penny said smiling and then walking away to continue to Nick’s house. |
