The need for a light house at this point was obvious from the tragic number of people that perished here prior to the light house being built. The lighthouse was constructed in 1909 and considered to be the Island's finest structure. With the automation of the lighthouse, the nearby keeper's residences are now available for accommodation.
Since the first recorded shipwreck in 1847, over 50 ships have been lost around the coast of Kangaroo Island, many with loss of life. One of the more notable and tragic events occurred when th Loch Vennacher sailed into the cliffs on the west coast in 1905 with the loss of all 27 crew. Only one body was found and buried, unidentified, in the sandhills of West Bay.

Beneath the point is a spectacular landform called "Admirals Arch", a natu- ral archway cut out by wind and water and pounded by towering seas. Seals and penguins can be seen nestling on the rock plattforms around this location. From the platforms at the bottom of Admirals Arch you can see large colonies of New Zealand Fur Seals. |

"Kelly Hill Caves!"
In the 1880's a horse named "Kate Kelly" stumbled into a sinkhole and the park name commemorates this horse. Many sinkholes have since been found in the area. On examination, it was discovered that, below ground there was a beautiful network of limestone caves that contain picturesque stalactites and stalagmites displays. The main cave is now easily accessed after a short walk up the hill from the picnic area.
These limestone caves contain the fossil remains of many animals including some prehistoric that had the same fate as the horse.

"Little Sahara!"
This is an area of spectacular white sand dunes, surrounded by bush vegetation. Climbing over the first ridge, you are confronted by a second and much higher dune, which when scaled, does not expose the coast as one would expect, but more dunes flanked by bushland.
A climb to the top of the razor back ridges in the heat of the day will convince you that the shade of the Australian bush is far more preferable.
