Matilda Jane Dupy was born on March 5, 1843 in Preble county, Ohio and died on January 28, 1908 at Moscow. She married John W. Gray on April 9, 1863 in Lee county, Iowa. Matilda and John had five children, four that can be verfied from the 1870 Lee county, Iowa census data and the fifth child is verified from Vella Mae (Dupy) VanDevanter living in Chillicothie, Missouri who states she was named after this child. The five children are: Leoto, born 1864 in Iowa, Charles H., born 1866 in Illinois, Mary E., born 1867 in Illinois, Lafayette, born 1869 in Illinois and Vella, born 1871 in Illinois. A couple of years ago I was sent a copy of Matilda's obituary from a cousin, Donald Dupy, who lives outside of Austin, Texas. In her obituary it mentions Matilida living in Moscow, but there is no mention of the state. She is buried in the Moscow Cemetery. Now Dupy's in the early 1900's were living in Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Oklahoma. I am thinking that the Gray family was living in Moscow Iowa at the time of Matilda's death, but there is no record of her name on the listing of graves for this cemetery. So this mystery remains unsolved.
There are five female children in John and Mary Dupy's family and most of them are known by their nicknames. Elizabeth Ann (known as Lizzie), Matilda Jane (known as Tillie), Erena (died at the age of 3), Katherine Sophia (known as Kate), and Mattie (known as Matt). |
