Lamar Sweeps TSU Baseball in Beaumont BEAUMONT, TX -- Senior Jeremy Pierce sizzled at the plate this weekend, while Lamar swept the final game of the three-game set on Sunday afternoon with Texas Southern, 6-4 at Vincent-Beck Stadium. Pierce finished the weekend series 9-for-10 with a double, home run, and nine runs batted in. The Conroe native accounted for four of Lamar's six RBI, including a two-run single in the fourth inning to knot the score at 4-4. Lamar (10-3) found itself in a hole early when Texas Southern put three runs on the board in the first frame off Cardinal starter Thomas Atlee. The Cards answered with a run in the bottom of the inning when junior Stephen Graham led off with a double and came home on a Pierce RBI single to right field. The Tigers, who fall to 0-10 on the season, picked up another run in the third when designated hitter David Bell, lined a double down the left field line and was brought home by a single up the middle by Calvin Fugett. After the Cards tied up the game in the fourth, they took the lead for good in the sixth with two runs. With two outs, shortstop Anthony Hayes reached on an error by the shortstop and stole second base. Graham doubled down the left field line scoring Hayes. Pierce followed with his fourth-consecutive hit, which brought home Graham. Junior Richard Vela (1-0) pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief for the win. Vela entered the game after fellow junior Terry Spencer struck out eight hitters in three innings pitched. Senior Wes Cooksey pitched the remaining 2 2/3 innings of the game and picked up his second save of the season.
