Great Books for Kids
Children love to read or be read to! Reading increases knowledge and improves schoolwork because good reading ability and comprehension are fundamental no matter what your child is studying!  My children are as voracious at reading as I am, and have many books they recommend to other children.  Read below to find out some of their favorites and what they (and I) like about each one!

Tiger is a Scaredy Cat(Ages 5-6):  Tiger is a cute cat who is afraid of everything until he learns to overcome his fear to help a friend.

Kids' like: When the mouse is crying and Tiger decides to help; when Tiger is no longer afraid of the dark.

I like: Shows children good moral messages (helping others in need, bravery) as well as an easy to read starter book for children.

I Spy Treasure Hunt(Ages 6 and up):  Great picture riddles accented by rhyming verse.

Kids' like: Good for learning how to find things.  Neat pictures!

I like: Rythmic verses help children learn to read.  Pictures teach children to systematically look for objects by ruling out sections or pages.  Also good for younger children who like to look for the objects, even if they are unable to read.

The Boxcar Children-Series #1(Ages 7-12):  Orphaned children determined to remain a family make their home in an abandoned boxcar.

Kids' like: Realistic characters; when the kids help the injured dog; when they find out their grandfather is nice.

I like: Nice story line that has remained a classic for years.

Clifford and the Grouchy Neighbors(Ages 5-8):  Clifford wants to be everyone's friend, but a couple of grouchy neighbors are not happy with this big red dog.

Kids' like: All the trouble Clifford gets into, and how one good thing makes the grouchy people like him.

I like: Clifford plot is very predictable, good illustrations, and the stories are enjoyable.

The Pain and the Great One(Ages 5-8):  Two perspectives of one story-sibling rivalry.  Interesting story, kids really enjoy it.

Kids' like: Point out the faults of one another, but still show they love each other.

I like: This is another masterpiece by Blume; this time she addresses sibling rivalry by showing two perspectives on one situation.
