Junie B. Jones books are wonderful stories told by a little girl (Junie) about her everyday adventures.  The best part is that they are written like a little girl would talk.  The characters are vibrant and the stories are great!
My kids like: Junie B.'s enthusiasm and wit.  She is sassy and fun!
I like: The character development and plot.  One bonus is that Junie B. uses words that aren't really words, and it helps the kids sound words out!
They are great AND inexpensive!

Tigers at Twilight is book #19 in the Magic Tree House series.  The stories can be read as a series or independently.  In this book, the children travel to India and encounter jungle wild life in their quest to save Teddy (a dog).
My kids like: The sense of adventure and the idea of travelling through books to exotic locales and situations.
I like: Scientific ideas and correct pronounciation are emphasized throughout the books (psssst, don't tell your kids!).

What child doesn't relish the idea of finding out that he or she is secretly famous and possesses magical powers?  This happens to Harry!  After being orphaned and raised by hateful relatives, Harry learns he is a wizard and is off to the famous Hogwart's School for witches and wizards!  First in the series of what will be 7 books.
What a great beginner book!  My four-year-old found this gem at the library at pre-school and he loved it so much we had to buy him his own copy!  Two little monkeys destroy the house while their oblivious sitter talks on the phone and thinks they are behaving perfectly!
My kids like:  The illustrations and the trouble the monkeys get into.
I like: Seuss-like story with the monkeys taking care of the messes they made before their parents come home.
