Re: Metal Detector at County Courthouse
Dear Mr. Thornhill:
Thank you for your December 6, 1999 letter regarding the above referenced matter. I have consulted with the Sheriff and have been authorized to respond.
The Sheriff regrets any inconvenience, however minor, associated with the metal detector. However, the courts and County have a duty to insure the safety of both workers and members of the public attending the courthouse while, at the same time, balancing that need with the public's right to access.
The use of metal detectors has been judicially sanctioned as the least draconian method to accomplish such goal. Hence, metal detectors have been utilized at airports and State and federal courthouses.
In your case, you suffered a minor time inconvenience when you were requested to return your pocket knife to your car prior to entering the courthouse. Hopefully, this was a one time inconvenience.
Based upon the foregoing, the County and the Sheriff must respectfully decline your request to meet. Thank you for bringing this matter to our attention.

Somehow, the COUNTY COUNSEL seems to have completely missed the point. Taken together with my initial Complaint, this was an unreasonable and unacceptable response, so I filed a Complaint against the COUNTY COUNSEL.
