| Dairy Milking the Bosk... for a continuous supply of fresh milk, cream and butter. Three legged milking stool and sterile pails are kept in the storage wagon. The milk bosk are in a pen near Camp. Milk the bosk by pulling the teats. Empty the buckets into the vat in the cooler. Make Butter, Bosk Cheese. Skim the cream from the milk vat in the cooler and pour it into the butter churn. Pump the handle up and down, moving tghe paddle inside the churn. The mixture will become thick and it will be harder to move the handle, eventually a ball of butter will form. This should be pressed into a mold and put in the cooler. Pour off the buttermilk (whey), check supplies in the servery, if there is enough - feed the whey to the pet sleens. Cheese... take milk from the vat and place it in the cheese vat, light the fire, add the starter and cook until curds form. Add rennet and any flavourings (herbs etc.) cook until it is the right consistency and drain. Wrap the cheese in a cheesecloth and set it in the cooler to age. Eggs... Vulo eggs to be collected and stored in the Servery. Fermented Milk Curd This is a traditional drink of the Tuchuk please check how it is made here. A method for collecting fruit yeast for the Curd is also to be found on the same page. The Sewing Basket Do daily checks for mending Launder dirty clothing, rags, towels etc. gather, wash and replace Make bandages. Find rags in good condition (not silk) wash and rip them into long strips, boil them to sterilise, dry and roll them up store them in the Medicine Wagon. Mending clothing and embroidering. Clothing to be mended is kept in a trunk at the far corner of the serving furs. Two mending baskets are kept in the trunk. FW Clothing, Vests, Tunics can be embroidered with any design. Embroidery supplies are also in the small trunk by the serving furs. Permission is not needed to use a sewing needle. Sewing threads may be cut with the teeth. Sewing Leathers for Masters. Masters should be measured for the leathers. Take Their waist, hip size and inseam. Make the pattern, ask permission to use a quiva to cut out the leathers (leather is in the storage wagon) sew the leather. Leather dresses can be made for the FW. (Some protection for the fingers is good to prevent sore fingers from pushing the needle through.) General Camp Duties Furs: Fireside furs should always be kept clean, brushed out, and ready for Camp Free and for Guests. No FreePerson should ever have to arrive at our fires and sit upon a mess. Slaves are responsible for making sure the furs are beaten clean of dust, aired and brushed every day. If a FreePerson requests that a slave clean their wagon furs, then the slave is to do that as well. Picking up dishes scattered around Camp for washing Collecting dried bosk dung for fuel. Collect in a sack and kept near the animal pens to add to the fires to augment the wood supply Maintain the dance pit. Check for anything that may harm feet. Inspect the pole to make sure it is smooth and free of splinters. Oil and polish the pole Making Healing Salve: this is a combination of kanda leaf and brak bush, cooked with bosk lard and then packaged in small vials, store most of the vials in the medicine wagon but make sure there are a couple in the servery. Gathering ice: storing it (winter only) chip ice off the river, carry the blocks to the cooling room, stack them and sprinkle sawdust over each layer to keep the blocks from sticking to each other. Craft Make rope and twine from fibers such as those which come from hair (kaiila and bosk) rep cloth.. they can be braised into rope or rolled into twine Weave baskets using twine, twigs etc Carving little animals/novelties from horn. The uncarved horns are kept in the storage wagon. These carvings can be Gorean animals, Rari, FWs etc. these items can be colored with dyes also. Anything carved belongs to a slaves Master. Permission must be given before a slave may give these items to A/another. Many carved items are sold or used as trade. (get permission to use something to carve with. Beading, making earrings, belly chains, bracelets, binas. Beads, wires, chains etc., are kept in a chest by the serving furs. Use imagination, make them as intricate as you like. If you beg a Free they might let you use gold, silver, jewels etc. to make jewelry for Free People - gold, silver has to be melted and poured into a mold or beaten into shape. Weaving cloth (i.e. different color silks/veils for dances, blankets, cloth for Masters' tunics and FWs' robes) threads, yarns are in the sewing wagon. you must warp up the loom (that's putting the thread/yarn on) and then you weave by going under and over each string, you use a shuttle to push what you have woven tightly together (pull on the shuttle every few rows) -- the design can be as intricate as you wish -- when you have finished the piece, you must tie off the ends and then cut it from the loom (you'll need permission to use a quiva to cut it off the loom). Provisions and Game Curing skins of the game brought to Camp. Skins are in the storage wagon. Clean them of any fleshy debris then stake them out in the sun for a couple of days. Once dried, rub the skin side with a stick or a rock until it is soft and smooth (these will be used as furs) Other hides remove the fur by scraping it away with a clam shell or something similar than rub both sides until soft and smooth. Store the hides in the storage wagon Another method of curing skins of the game is smoke tanning -- A method of tannage used in combination with an oil tannage, whereby the fat-saturated skins are subjected to the smoke of wood fires. The smoke from the charring wood contains aldehydes, acetaldehyde, and formaldehyde, which have tanning properties. The heat also assists in the oxidation of the oil, promoting further aldehyde and polymer production. Some volatile tarry substances also often become included in the skin. Smoke tanning, simply because it involves aldehyde formation from the partial oxidation of woody materials, can be used to tan hides and skins without the need to use fats. Although a minor tannage method, it is still being used in North and South America, as well as in China. (check the web page on Gorean animals if unsure what the Master has killed) |
