Hi all, My name is Deb Decker and I am enrolled in the grad program for Reading and ESL. I began teaching in 1976 and taught from PK- Adult Ed for 27 years while also doing administration in the private sector. I was an administrator and teacher of a school in Germany and came to the US to open my own private PK-first grade school. My field is EC-4 and although I still own the school I have, for the past 8 years, been working full time as a National Director of Short term Ed. programs for a foreign student exchange organization. I handle all facets of English language program coordination for Asian students who come to the US for 3-4 week EL immersion programs. I write curriculum for the programs, select the teachers, coordinate with public and private schools and travel frequently in and out of the US to promote the programs and work with the embassy for visas. The job is a very demanding one but also very rewarding as it has afforded me the opportunity to see many things that I otherwise would not have. Unfortunately I am not getting any younger and this mad pace is something that I do not want to keep up forever. It was for that reason that I selected this program as a springboard to my Ed. D and to teach distance ECE classes at the university level from poolside in my retirement sipping Pina Coladas ( have laptop will teach )
On a personal note I am the mommy of two adopted girls both now teenagers(GEEZ) and the mom to kids from all over the globe that have lived with us in the past 20 years. I am a dog lover I have 5 and every cat in the neighborhood has adopted me. We have 5 live in deer, and a love for any living creature. All of our dogs are adopted with the exception of my Old English by the name of Tucker...In addition to my school my husband and I also own a foreign car repair shop for which I do all of the formative accounting and in my spare time I volunteer for causes like Project Graduation and the foster parent program. I am so excited to be challenged by the classes that I am taking this semester. I only hope that I was not too ambitious by taking too many hours. I really look forward to meeting all of you personally through email and discussion and learning all that I can from everyone.
