                      “Yes you
can meet someone at the Oktoberfest”

One of my best friends (and life-long skiing buddy), Mike Golding, was in from New York to finally experience the world-famous Oktoberfest.  And, not wanting to be a bad host, I couldn’t keep him from getting the FULL experience….  So… at 7am on Sat Oct, 2nd, 2004 we set out to try and get a table in one of the beer “tents”.  -Not a task to be taken lightly.  It requires either years of waiting to get a reservation or lots of luck and waiting in line at 7 AM in the hope that they open your door first so you can run in and find an empty table.  Lucky for us we were 10 people split up around 2 tents.  After they opened the doors, ONE of us got a table.  A few phone calls later and we all found our way into the Winzerer Fähndl tent.  This is one of the largest tents with close to 11,000 seats and Paulaner beer (6%). (Not the best, but one of the better beers at the fest). Anyway after the stress of getting a table we were happy to get our first beer at 9:15am!

A bit of background:  Beers are 1 liter or about the size of 3 US beers.  They taste much better cold, so you tend to drink them fast…  The tents get full and they close the doors (you can only get in with a reservation).  So if you want to keep your table you have to stay in the tent all day long.

Fast forward (past many many beers, a rotisserie chicken and a few giant pretzels) to 7pm. Yes 10 hours later…  Where am I you ask? Yup that’s right… still at our precious table!  We got to know everyone around us (The Oktoberfest is one of the few times when even the more reserved Germans will spontaneously talk with people they don’t know…).  And while talking to some fellow revelers at the next table, I noticed a cute girl with an infectious smile sitting on a railing looking over at me.  Thanks to the liters of “liquid courage” I had been ingesting over the past 10 hours, I went over and talked to her.  Somehow, even after all that beer, she found me funny and charming. (Maybe she had her own liquid courage?)  ;-)    I am sure we had a long (and meaningful) conversation and eventually she gave me her number (something she says she regrets to this day!) I am going to claim the 5th on anything else that happened in the tent that night, but unfortunately there are pictures…
Luckily we both survived that night and Nicole agreed to see me again.  Amazingly enough she still found me funny and charming (or she is a very good liar) and the rest is history…
