First of all why don't you introduce us to all the members and what there purpose in the band is?
Alex Markwell : Lead Guitar
Alex Dempsey : Vocals
Adrian Karvinen: Guitar
Shane O'Keeffe : Bass
Elliott Hammond: Drums
How did ya come up with your band name?
Alex M - Well I’m not too sure how exactly we came up with it but it goes something like this...
we were sitting in the kitchen one day, trying to think of band names and Shane suggested that
we try to think of something new school ... then some how the word hero ended up on the um...
end of it and there you have it... newschoolhero.. exciting huh?
Elliot - Sadly there is no elaborate story here, Shane was the brains behind the name, he wanted a
name with hero in and we thought the word new would sound kinda cool as well so he brain
stormed for a bit and came up with the name ¡¡¥¥New School Hero¡¡ | the name actually doesn’t
¡¡ |t have anything to do with the term New School, as in ¡¡¥¥New School Punkrock. So that¡¡ |s
basically it.
Shane - Our band name was one we thought up over 2 years ago there’s no great story behind we
just all liked the sound of it and its stuck ever since.
What are all your feelings on how people are categorizing different punk bands, now a days?
Alex M - I think that a lot of the time people are too quick to categorize and judge bands,, usually
people hear about half a minute of a song and then pidgeon hole a band into a single category
regardless of what the rest of their material sounds like,, usually they don’t give bands a chance,,
as soon as they hear something slightly punky, and melodic they automatically brand them as
"pop punk"without really giving them a chance to show their true style (I’m not sure if that
happens over in Canada but it does over here in Aus.)
Elliot - There is so much variety in the style of music known as punk. Nowadays Hardcore bands
are classed in the punk genre but 10 years ago would be death metal so categorising it is really
hard. People often call NSH a punk band but we all disagree, we class ourselves as a rock band
and a lot of people have trouble understanding that. Just because we have a few fast drum beats
in our music it doesn’t mean were punk.
Shane - I dunno hey its getting a bit confusing for me...id prefer to not be categorised at all but
cos of the way we dress and our views on certain topics I guess we will always be faced with
been written off as a pop punk band
What is your definition on what punk is?
Alex M - the term punk can cover sooooo many different styles of music,, from bands like blink
182 to Rancid.. nowadays I think people just use the word punk too freely cause they can't be
bothered trying to define a bands real style
Elliot - Punk? Is an excuse to break things.
Shane - Hmm im not sure I don’t consider myself punk nor would the rest of the band...I instantly
thing that some one who says that they are "punk" is not that at all.. to me someone that’s punk is
someone who does something they truly believe is right and stand up for their convictions
weather it is a fashion sense religion whatever..but that’s just me
