I left Chuch Hill. Church Hill Road meets 553 at Chruch Hill. I took it toward the Natchez Trace. I wanted to head back toward the river but the sun was sinking quickly and I was no where near Port Gibson. I had under estimated the distance. It was just "that far" on the map? I saw Rodney Road from the Trace as I headed north on it. I could not get to it because the Trace is a very limited access road. Thankfully, or I might still be riding out here. I got to 552 and a sign that said "Windsor Ruins". Thank goodness for big old signs for big old dummies. This was one of my projected targets. One that had been suggested by several readers as a "must place" for this rag to go. One person suggests something and I'll go. Two or more and it is a pilgrimage. Another sign appeared off 552, saying, "Windsor Ruins". I was in the groove. When 552 turns hard left, keep straight, and guess where you'll be, on Rodney Road. Shortly, there was a small sign saying "Windsor Ruins". Some how, that, after being presented with the aura of what came next, did not seem sufficient. I parked, drank some water, I was dry, and started to look around. I was conscience of being alone. There have been incidences and I am wary. Windsor is a burned out plantaion house, built in 1859. In 1863 Grant rested his soldiers after they landed down the road at Bruinsburg. She burned in the late 1800's when some fool through a cigar or cigarette into a trash can or something. I didn't see the following, then. The pictures often tell more. |
