Subject:  Computer Technology

Grade Level:  Grades 10-12  

Objective: Using a Power Point presentation to introduce the <pre> and <block quote> tags, the students will then be able to create their own names in ASCII art using these HTML tags.

 Duration:15-20 minute PowerPoint Presentation will introduce the <pre> and <block quote> tags, followed by a hands-on activity that will take approximately 20-25 minutes.

Materials Needed:

1.      Computer with projector

2.      Smart Board

3.      Power Point Presentation

4.      Blackboard & chalk

5.      Handouts

 Lesson Procedure:

1.      Teacher will use PowerPoint Presentation designed to introduce and explain how the <pre> and <block quote> tags work and the purpose they serve.

2.      Students will be assigned task of completing their name in ASCII Art using the <pre> tag.

3.      Teacher will assist students as necessary in completing assignment.

Independent Practice:

Create an HTML document that will allow your browser to display your name as ASCII Art.  Students who need additional challenge will create their own name in ASCII Art using the negative space of a shape.  Students who complete the assignment can take the additional challenge or embellish their art with the use of color tags.

Criteria for Assessment:

v    To what degree was the student able to define the problem and translate that definition into a design for a solution.

v    To what degree the student will be able to incorporate their solution into the required document.

v    Students will be able to demonstrate mastery by completing the first four letters of their name in the allotted 20-minute time frame to 90% accuracy.

v    Using the attached rubric, students will be graded on a scale of 1 through 4 with 4 being the highest level of achievement.
