DNA Testing

Background:  DNA testing can complement your traditional genealogy research and help you discover new family connections, and even the likely place of origin of your family surname.

What is DNA?  DNA is a molecule found in most cells that contains the instructions for how to build a new copy of the body.  DNA is found in chromosomes which are inherited from our parents.

Y-Chromosome DNA:  Y-chromosomes are only inherited by men from their fathers.  This means that all males that descend from a common male ancestor will have virtually identical Y-chromosome DNA.

DNA Testing: You can collect Y-chromosome DNA at home by a simple swab from the inside of the cheek, then mail the sample to a lab for analysis. Results are posted on a secure web site.

Results: Y-chromosome DNA results consist of a series of marker values that are like an ID code.  Other males with a similar ID code are most likely to be related.

Our Services:  We can arrange for DNA testing through FamilyTreeDNA, setup surname projects, and create project web sites. See the Little DNA Project for an example.
