My 1998 Type R - #801
History: I purchased my Type R (#801) in Columbus, Ohio in June of 1999. The car had 13K miles and was sold by an owner who also had a 97 Type R. I guess you can have too much of a good thing ;-) Why the R?: I don't honestly believe there is a car I would more enjoy owning for around $20K. The automotive press may say it's lacks a little refinement, but I can assure you the engineers did it intentionally and I can certainly tolerate it. Sure, it's about as close to a race car as you're probably going to get from the factory (at least Honda), but it does do a fine job as a primary road vehicle too. Hatchback versatility, Honda reliability, and a HUGE fun factor make the R a very entertaining and enjoyable street car too. I'll concede it does lack some creature comforts (like A/C) and is a little noisy, which does make the R a little less than enjoyable on some occasions, but get this car out on the track and those complaints will quickly vanish. In fact you'll probably need someone to remove the HUGE smile from your face once you get out of the car. This car is simply that wonderful to drive at or near the limit. It's superbly balanced, has a strong flexible motor, excellent gearbox, massive brakes, nicely weighted, communicative steering, etc., etc. The car just works so masterfully that it really inspires you to push it harder and then rewards you with balanced, predictable handling even at the limit. Anyway, you can see that if you own an R, you can't just let it sit in your garage and collect dust. You HAVE to race it...at least a little!!! Enjoy!!!
