Introduction
This page is about creating new ways for yourself
to enjoy the music of U2. While I and many other U2 fans enjoy making compilations
of our favourite U2 songs to listen to in the car, at parties, in the Discman,
etc., we generally give little thought to the logical structuring of these.
I first got this idea from a guy whose web
page expounded the virtues of a 'Restored' Joshua Tree album (I'll link to him
if I ever find his page again). His theory (also proposed by Dave Bowler
& Bryan Dray in their 1993 book 'U2 - A Conspiracy of Hope') was that The
Joshua Tree was originally to be a double album, but under pressure from the
record company, it became a single album with the discarded songs turning up
as B sides to the Joshua Tree singles. Based on various interviews and
interpretations of songs from this era, this guy recreated what the track list
of the supposed double album may have been like. Even if it is not completely
accurate, it does allow U2 fans and others to listen to and appreciate the songs
of this period in a different way.
I have extended on this idea to aim to
capture the full official recorded works of U2 at certain phases: The Unforgettable
Fire, Rattle And Hum (Live vs Studio), Achtung Baby, Zooropa/Passengers, Pop
and All That You Can't Leave Behind (in addition to the Joshua Tree).
The track listings are based on the order of the original album, with B sides
(and other recordings of the era) interspersed between them. The order
of songs is generally of my own invention unless stated otherwise. My original
idea of making compilation cassette tapes has been updated as CD-burning technology
allows us now to eliminate the idea of the A versus the B side.
While I appreciate each U2 album in its
original form as a thing of beauty, and am loath to tamper with the songwriting
genius represented by the particular sequence of songs, I nevertheless was tempted
to experiment to explore new dimensions in my well-established passion (since
1984) for listening to U2.
Observations made through this project lead me to conclude that
other logical compilations would be a Best of U2 Live collection (or live tracks
grouped into eras) and a remixes compilation.
Your comments, suggestions (eg. ideas for
pre-Unforgettable Fire compilations) are welcomed.

THE RESTORED JOSHUA
TREE
"The Joshua Tree was undeniably the most mature of U2's albums but
it was not a record that could be fully appreciated in total isolation. During
recording, they put together around twenty songs and there was heated debate
about the final track listing. Rather than release a double album which would
undoubtedly have been too much for listeners to take in, the album as it stands
coming close to being overpowering, they decided to reinvent the role of the
single, adding the extra songs as B-sides. Of these seven additional tracks,
some were obviously experimental and almost incomplete but the majority were
the equal of virtually anything on the final album. In looking at the Joshua
Tree, some consideration has to be given to that music."
( Dave Bowler & Bryan Dray, 'U2 - A Conspiracy of
Hope' 1993, p.210-211)

RATTLE
AND HUM - Studio Tracks
The separation of Rattle And Hum songs into Studio Tracks and Live Tracks
is logical, as both sets of songs were quite distinct at the time. This
compilation works well, particularly considering the American theme running throughout
(with the exception of the Australian colonial-style ballad, Van Diemen's Land).

THE

In reflection it appears that U2 were at their creative peak during the

THE
COMPLETE ZOOROPA
The Zooropa period was a relatively barren one in terms of B sides. We
saw instead a continuation of the trend towards having remixes on singles which
commenced with the Achtung Baby singles. An artificial marrying of Zooropa
with the preferred songs from U2's next project, Passengers: Original Soundtracks
1 and inclusion of Hold Me Thrill Me Kiss Me Kill Me from the Batman Forever
Soundtrack is a convenient way of reflecting U2's 1993-95 period.

THE COMPLETE
POP
This compilation is based on that proposed by Joe Keebler
and posted to the Wire emailing list on 17 February 1998. A scarcity of
B sides also characterised U2's Pop period. There could be some debate
as to whether Two Shots of Happy should be included as part of this or the Zooropa
period. I have chosen to include it in the appropriate period during which
it was officially recorded. Similarly, Slow Dancing, another of the B
sides to If God Will Send His Angels, was originally recorded as a B side for
the single One, and so does not belong to the Pop era.

NOTHING LEFT
BEHIND
U2's multi-Grammy award-winning 2000 album All That
You Can't Leave Behind was seen by many as a comeback after the comparatively
unsuccessful commercial success of Pop and a Best Of compilation that some
may have regarded as a farewell. More informed critics saw it as a logical
next step after the technological experimentation and accompanying live stadium
extravanganzas had been exhausted at the conclusion of the Popmart Tour. Musically
we saw a combination of trends from past eras - a separate project (Million
Dollar Hotel) that to an extent set the tone for the new album, a number of
new songs from the album sessions, and a variety of remixes (particularly
for Elevation) filling out the singles.

BEST OF BEST OFS
This compilation represents a sample of the most successful tracks from U2's
two Best Of compilations (ie. all were released as singles, unlike songs such
as Bad and Until The End Of The World which also appear on the compilations).
I consider there to be some glaring omissions, eg. Gloria, Two Hearts Beat As
One, Please, and The Fly was only included as a hidden track on the 1990-2000
release for some countries. Go here
to get a better idea of what I regard as The Best Of U2.

BEST OF BEST
B SIDES
One again this compilation is restricted merely to those B sides that appeared
on the two official release Best Of & B Sides collections. It does however
provide a good representation of U2's approach to B sides over the two decades,
with remixes and dance mixes proliferating in the
second decade. To provide a more exrtensive experience across the two compilations,
I have also deliberately not chosen remixes of any songs that appear on the
Best Of compilation above.
