STATE OF QATAR

Brief history of the postal service:

The postal services in Qatar commenced from May 20, 1950. During the years 1950 and 1951, British stamps were used in Doha with the value surcharged in Indian currency annas and rupees.

From December 1952 to January 1954, stamps of Queen Elizabeth II were issued including the coronation stamp of 1sh 6d value surcharged with one rupee.

The government took over full responsibilities of postal service in 1963. The department of posts expanded its services by opening post office branches and assigning postal agencies in the capital and outside the city in order to provide better services to the public. During the last 27 years department of posts had full support from H.H. The Emir, Shaikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani.
