Services provided by Upward Bound as a part of the program's core curriculum are instruction in mathematics through precalculus, laboratory science, foreign language, composition, and literature. Other services provided include: 1. instruction in reading, writing, study skills, mathematics, and other subjects necessary for success beyone secondary school; 2. personal counseling; 3. academic advice and assistance in secondary school course selection; 4. tutorial services; 5. exposure to cultural events, academic programs, and other activities not usually available to disadvantaged youth; 6. activities designed to acquainted youths participating in the project with the range of career options available to them; 7. instruction designed to prepare youths participating in the project for careers in which persons from disadvantaged backgrounds are particularly underrepresented; 8. on-campus residential programs; 9. mentoring programs involving elementary or secondary school teachers, faculty members at institutions of higher education, students, or any combination of such persons; and 10. programs and activities as described earlier in numbers (1) through (9) which are specially designed for students of limited English proficiency. Academic Year Component During the academic year, the required core curriculum courses, described above, are offered at the Northern Marianas College to Upward Bound participants who have registered and enrolled at Northern Marianas College. Those not enrolled are provided core curriculum and other permissable courses at the Upward Bound Center. Academic and personal counseling services, as well as, tutorial assistance, workshops, seminars, field trips, cultural awareness activities, career development opportunities and other self enriching activities aimed at improving academic success are offered throughout the academic year. The Upward Bound Offices on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota are opened during regular school days for participants to use as study centers and tutorial and meeting sites. Computers equipped with word processing, spreadsheet, data base, internet access and reference softwares are available at the centers for participants' use. Extracurricular activities intended to enhance academic success as well as self awareness and confidence are also offered during the academic year component. Summer Component A six week summer session is held at the NMC-Saipan campus every summer. Daily activities, lasting at least six (6) hours, is divided between morning sessions of college-level classes and tutorials in mathematics, English, reading and writing, and afternoon sessions involving workshops, seminars, and personal projects designed to prepare students for college life. |
