UK Trip 2005
Spent a VERY mellow hour or so at Louis' Beach Cafe, hearing Black Uhuru on the cafe stereo, watching the water in sunshine that put Sydney to shame (not the same ugly humidity, even 20 yards from the ocean). Friendly people, great coffee, very relaxed (when chattering classes loudmouths departed). Most relaxed and in-tune I had felt anywhere so far since boarding the plane. If this place is new on the promenade, it should be a model for the others. Walked further, much further, up to what was called the Palace Pier and has now been re-badged Brighton Pier...presumably since, sadly, there is now only one. Fun arcade a little too much noise, heat and population right now, and there's plenty of Rock to buy later. I choose to come back later but fail to do so during the next 27 hours. Next time? Up to St James' Street for a look; not as much fun as tourist-driven brass'n'glass The Lanes or Mod-and-Veggie-driven North Laine areas. Back along the seafront and up through Old Steine to The Lanes and then to the North Laine district, with the mighty Gardner Street, home of Vegetarian Shoes & many many other fine shops and cafes. Vegetarian Shoes, one of my top three initial reasons to come to Brighton, is closed, an hour early. Wander...to the well-respected mod emporium, Jump The Gun (as in "Mother Superior..."). And then...!
