UK Trip 2005
Met Clive Wedderburn (aka PC Gary McCann in The Bill, once upon a time) in Jump The Gun! Was in there discussing Harringtons with the proprietor when this bloke with short dreads and a short beard came in with a mate, looking to buy a Fred Perry shirt. Within literally ten seconds they had managed to bring down a whole clothing-rail of jackets! Profuse apologies followed, while the proprietor looked shocked and bemused. The guy with the dreadlocks looked familiar, so I had to sidle up to him like some kind of stalking weirdo and say "It's you, isn't it?" (How is anyone ever supposed to answer a question like that?). He was very nice about it, warm smile and of-course-that's-not-a-stupid-question, even stood with me for two takes of the ultimate fan-geek device, the look-who-I'm-standing-with photograph. The photo was taken by the shop guy, and it's not perfectly in focus, but it was a moment! Mr Wedderburn couldn't quite believe an Australian wanted to buy a fishtail parka (he came to Australia a few years back and was in a TheatreSports night at the Enmore Theatre). He wished me a happy holiday and away he went, before the meeting had even had time to sink in. He was in and out in a flash, after trying on just one Fred Perry (and buying it...and I have to say it looked a whole damn lot better on him than any of them did on me). Wish I'd thought to tell him how much better The Bill was during his era too, but I suspect he'd know that. Over the street afterwards to soothe my usual "too large for mod clothing" pain with a vegetarian burger at RedVeg, where I was entertained for the duration of my meal by Doves' "The Last Broadcast" ... remarkable how so many things about Brighton just click.
