UK Trip 2005
The Walkabout bar is still there in Covent Garden, and doubtless still a beacon for lost and thirsty Aussies, and I still didn't go in. Was there once last time for exactly three minutes with Kirsty and her lovely friend, before we all decided oxygen was more vital than alcohol...even alcohol with a giant video screen showing INXS clips.

Went in search of something to suggest at least the above-ground location of the old Aldwych tube station (a major WWII shelter site, long since removed from the Tube maps), but found only Bush House. Subconsciously whistling Vera Lynn tunes at the same time until thoroughly melancholy. The London Transport Museum have apparently canned their Aldwych tube station tours owing to a THREE YEAR WAITING LIST...sigh. At least I'm not the only sad bastard in the world. Wandered round Aldwych (the street) to The Strand. Disappointed to find the forecourt of St Clement Danes church being used as a short-term carpark by all and sundry. The only sign there that anyone still gives a toss about the RAF of the past was two fresh wreaths on the statues out front. Australia House is still there and nobody is parking on it. Down to Embankment, atmosphere lacking with so much dratted broad daylight-saving daylight about. A certain major accounting firm seems to have acquired about half the landspace down there too. Hmph. Didn't have time today to seek out the splendid elderly gentleman selling his historic photo prints at the back of Charing Cross. I hope he's still there. Feet about to go on strike, so it's on the peak-hour tube crush to Piccadilly Circus, then South Ealing, then the 65 bus. Pete's running a gig at Stripes (Brentford FC) tonight but zzzz....
