Welcome to the Biology section, the study of life. Biology is divided into many sections. The study of animals is zoology, as the study of plants is botany. Inside zoology and botany are further divided into studies, such as the study of birds ornithology and the study of fish ichthyology, and the study of trees dendrology and the study of flowers anthology. The study of fungi is mycology. There are around 1.5 million different species of living organisms, with animals being the most. They are grouped into taxonomic divisions, starting from the kingdoms. The basic unit of life is the cell. The study of cells is cytology. There are two types of cells: eukaryotes and prokaryotes (or eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic cells). The four classes of organic compounds are carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Click here to see a miscellaneous listing of families from the plant kingdom. |
