The National Collegiate Athletic Association, (NCAA), allows each division I Football program 85 scholarships (1-A) and 63 scholarships (1-AA). in Division II these are 36 scholarships available.

College Football is a "head count" sport which means that the sports scholarships that are offered are "full-Ride." To maintain division I status, a college team must have 76.5 football scholarship players and can carry eighty-five (85) active scholarship players. In Div. I-AA, institutions have sixty three scholarships, usually divided among eighty-five (85) players.

There are 119 Div. I-A, 117 Div. I-AA and 150 Div. II schools that offer football scholarships.
