THE ARTS
By Duane M. Ingalls
Fall 2000

I have an amazing stream-of-consciousness piece about "the arts" that's piling up in a
corner of my mind... but no, I won't be able to roll it all out right now, cause I have an exam
in a few hours and I'm amid the decompression from my day's work.
However, I do indeed intend to write it in the finest detail that I can muster when the
time's right. At this point at least I thought I'd wonder aloud (well, you know what I mean)
about what I will attempt to do with this "arts" thing.
Well, first I'll take a look back at the latest summer and consider what happened in this
neck-o-th-woods, as far as artistic stuff goes.
Yes, there were a few hilites hereabouts, in music, theatre, visual arts, etc. And since
"reviews" of such things are understatedly rare, where I might look for them in our
fine upstanding local media, it seems rightful that somebody out here oughta give it a shot.
Now perhaps, along with this first critical overview if-we-dare-presume-such, I ought to
present a calendar of some sort of upcoming & ongoing artistic items of interest.
I might mention what I'm going to go see and what I'm not, and why... And after I get
things rolling it'd be really neat to partake in some discussion with other of you
readers & writers about these things... Hmm?
Meanwhile, though, I just want to emphasize a dire encouragement to you to go out
and support the local "arts" scene, whatever it might be that you prefer. The mass-market
entertainment that we readily feed on is generally not healthy or invigorating, compared
to real live art & performance -- I'm convinced of this... Honest, I've tried a lot of it in my
quest for meaningful and just plain fun A & E... C'mon, keep the ol' eyes & ears open...
I'll see ya at the P.A.C., the
gallery, the cafe down the road... your front yard...
