Social Psychologists are Do-Nothin's
by Joscelyn Curtis Levine

I wanted to comment on something in relation to all the posts I received concerning Social Psychology, in my BEX 320 class, and for anybody who would care to read a truth.   Our society has  established what Social Psychology is; the broader study of an entire scope of various social ills and how all the studies of psychology are intertwined.  Let me define, under the heading of Social psychologist, another aspect of the job I think they should incorporate: That of mediator. If indeed Social psychologists do nothing about the social ills of our society but take notes and document everything, what good are they? I'm not impressed with any fields of psychology today, under any circumstances, because under the guise of "therapy," many times the psychologist/psychiatrist is not speaking truthfully to the patient/client. They want to remedy the problem by dosing the patient with pills. They lie to the patient by allowing the patient to keep thinking things that are wrong or unjust. They agree with their screwed up thinking because they want to be socially acceptable and Politically Correct.  They do not "mediate" between social groups and society as a whole. They don't try to heal the situation. We have "leaders" like Jesse Jackson, instigating more problems and pushing social circles further and further apart. He, for one, is no mediator or peace-maker.

There is more crime today than ever in history. There are more bad tempered, ill-mannered, revenge-getting husband and wives out there, than ever before.  What good has psychology really done? Of course, with the exception of a small handful of psychologists, most out there really are not putting a dent in anything. They sit. They listen. They take notes. They nod. They say, "Time's up." And you're out the door to do some more of the same, that brought you in there. Psychology books are facinating in that they document the various stages of say, development. I'm glad we know that stuff. I'm glad we know about behaviorism, and how the brain works. I'm glad there are counselors out there to help the chemically addicted. But most of psychology is observation and note-taking. There's no real changes being made, because there's no backbone out there. Everyone's afraid to step on another's toes.  (We're the most polite, wacky society in civilation).

If all I can get out of studying Social Psychology, or any of the other areas of psychology, is knowing that psychology is just that - a study - and nothing more, than fine. It's a great study. You get out of the study all you can get, and you learn some new stuff. But I've seen psychology take a destructive role in our big universities, the professors that grand-stand, feeding the students a lot of bull....the "everything's okay" attitude, and the "there's no wrong or right - it's all relative" these teachings are
coming out of the mouths of some of the "best" professors that Harvard can buy. And look at us.

I suggest to anyone who's studying psychology to beware of telling an "untruth" and don't be afraid to be honest with your client, speaking plainly. Nobody does that anymore.

My name is Joscelyn Levine. I live in Newbury Park, California. I am 42 years old and a returning student at the University of Maine, Machias. I thought I'd go this route (distance learning) since it was available and I like doing my work at home anyway. I enrolled in the BEX program for distance learners and I am currently getting my degree in Behavioral Science. After this, I will go on to get a Masters in Humanities.
I have three children, whom I love and appreciate dearly, ages 17, 13, and 11.
Some of my passions are gardening, especially indoor greenhouse ~ unusual plants. I love artwork and all art. I recently entered an art contest for the
county and won for Pen & Ink. It was a real highlight. I miss doing more art, but I've been so busy. I cook sometimes too, but ~ I don't like to do dishes! I also like to write. I wrote for the Evening Outlook, The Star News, and other various newspapers.
