Lady Down On Love"Conservatively Speaking!"
I guess that I have all the strikes against me in life. I am a female who is not offended when a gentleman opens a door, a mother who believes a family can survive without government interference, a southerner who believes WE had it right all along, a citizen who is not afraid to speak up, a civilian who honors the military but hopes they never see a need to put their training to use, and a registered republican and therefore a member of the "vast right wing conspiracy". One of these issues in today's society is...in itself...a fast track to social damnation...together they make me...unbearable.
I suppose that I am regarded by many as a "relic". I belong to an age when manners and morals went hand in hand. I was always taught that there are certain things that are expected of men and some that are expected of a women. As long as I could figure out which was which, I would be ok. I would not begin to say that I live by a strict puritanical code of ethics. I have my major flaws the same as anyone. I do believe that the world would be a whole lot better off if people would just take the time to be polite. I am really not offended when a man offers me assistance. I enjoy being treated with a bit of respect...not for being a woman...but for being human. I found that a simple "thank you" for having a door opened or some small assistance is all that is required or expected.
I would love to know how the government came to the conclusion they could raise a child. They can raise taxes, raise eyebrows, raise hell, but raise a child...I don't think so. Somewhere in the past thirty years the function of parenting has been taken away from mom or dad. Parents have very little say in how their child is taught in school (could this be why high school graduates cannot read), have no right to discipline a child in their home (or face criminal prosecution), or teach right from wrong without being judged as a moralist. Certain after school activities have been terminated in more liberal areas because they are deemed by activists as politically incorrect. If the rules cannot be changed than the program is no good. What, they ask, is wrong with a young boy wanting to join the girl scouts? Why can't my daughter play football? If they have to ask what is wrong, then they are the ones that are clueless. If you cannot see their view...you are at fault.
Southerners are a breed unlike any other geographic society. We believe that there is a time for everything and nothing needs to be hurried for the sake of convenience. Perhaps it is the long months of hot weather that forces us to slow down and take life a bit easier. No one seems to be in a hurry to go anywhere or do anything unless they have a auto tag from north of the Mason-Dixon Line or west of the Mississippi River...with perhaps the exception of Texas. We have found when people rush to get something done, it is usually done wrong. I am not wanting to start another "War Between the States" (see, I can speak yankee), but if you come down South for a visit, have a great time and feel free to partake of all the things we have to offer, but don't preach to us "how they do it up north"! We promise...we won't come up there and tell you how to ruin your world.
I was having lunch with a friend at a restaurant near a local Interstate highway and a couple were discussing how stupid Southerners were. My friend, who is from Maine, could tell that I was about to explode and just rolled her eyes at me. She and I waited until the couple were getting ready to leave and my friend...with her deep Down East accent... asked them if they were headed back "home". The woman said "Oh yes, I have had enough of these dumb people here". I commented to the woman that I guess that some of us are dumb. After all, I thought that "damn yankee" was one word until I was 15. I love spreading little bits of sunshine to brighten a stranger's day.
It never ceases to amaze me that SO many people move to the southern climates to retire because of out slower life styles, yet the first thing they want to do is change our way to their old rat-race. If they were so happy "THERE" then why are they HERE? Can it be that the south has had it right all these years. Are the individual states just places to live or should they have powers to protect their people from the ever-growing federal government. Should it not be up to the individual states (and the people who live in them) to see that children receive the best education, that businesses are not overburdened with unnecessary rules and regulations, that people who save and build for the future should not taxed into poverty even after death. This is what the South was fighting for, the right to have control over one's own destiny. The only reason I can think of why these ideals can not be met in today's world...there is some federal regulation that says they can not be.
In the past few decades the federal government, under Democratic leadership, has stepped so far out of bounds it has been called "out"! Liberals still continue playing the game, changing the rules each time a new poll is taken. Since the rules change so often.....I Have A Few Questions... ![]()
