New Zealand is located in the South Pacific, below the southeast tip of Australia. New Zealand is 18 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time, and is about 10,000 miles from Virginia. (So if you plan to visit, make sure that you get Frequent Flyer miles !!) It takes approximately 24 hours by plane to get from the Eastern US to New Zealand, and you arrive in NZ two days after you have left, by virtue of crossing the International Date Line. | ![]() |

New Zealand consists of a North and South Island. Auckland is the largest city in the North Island, while Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island. Wellington, the capital city, is located in the south of the North Island and is the second largest city in NZ. Christchurch is located midway down the South Island on the eastern coast.
