The Little Mermaid was presented to Disney in the 1930s with Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland, but it was put into the Disney Vault in its pre-production stages because of World War II.  Peter Pan and Alice and Wonderland emerged years later, but The Little Mermaid remained in storage until the late 1980s.

After the disapointment Walt Disney suffered after The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective, and Oliver and Company, they desperately needed a hit.  They relied on The Little Mermaid to be the masterpiece that brought them out of their losing streak.

Perhaps one of the reasons The Little Mermaid did so well was because of the underwater sequences that allowed them to be creative and the huge amount of imagination required to make the movie happen.  Throught the rough times and the not-so-rough times the animators took their time and were determined to make The Little Mermaid a classic.

Another reason people warmed up to The Little Mermaid were the characters you couldn't help but love.  There was Ariel, the headstrong teenager; Triton the overprotective father; Sebastian the reluctant babysitter; and the lovable Flounder.  Ursula the Sea Witch even made a name for herself, being considered the worst villian since Maleficient from Sleeping Beauty and Cruella De Vil from 101 Dalmatians.

When The Little Mermaid was released in 1989 for the first time, Disney received its first awards in a long time.  "Kiss the Girl" won an Oscar for Best Song, and The Little Mermaid was nominated for Best Score.

In North America The Little Mermaid earned $84 million and paved the way for other beloved Disney Classics like Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King.

In 1997 when Fox released Anastasia, Disney re-released The Little Mermaid to be its rival.

Three years later, in 2000, The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea was released directly to Disney DVD and Video, starring the original characters, and introducing Melody, the daughter of Ariel and Eric.
