May Advisory Council Minutes
• A representative from the Chicago Department of Environment attended the Ward meeting to discuss the city’s revamped recycling program.  Recyclables can be mixed together (paper + plastic + glass + aluminum) placed in any plastic bag (no more “blue bags”) and set inside the blue carts.  Rinsing is not necessary, as recyclables are cleaned and sorted at the city recycling center.  Yard waste should be bagged SEPARATELY and stored OUTSIDE the blue cart.  Residents who misuse the recycling bins will receive sticker violations on their bins and eventually fines will be implemented.
• A blue cart recycling collection schedule can be found at: www. 33rdward.org/news.html
• The Water Management Department is coming to the 33rd Ward.  They will be stationed near Whipple and Elston to assess and repair over 100 sewer cave-ins.  Pothole repair is awaiting federal money.
• Parking meters will soon be removed from Irving Park Road and replaced with pay boxes.
• The City will soon be charging for picnic permits at any city park.  Fees will be $32 for 3 hours and $42 for all day permits for 50 people or less.  Permit applications can be picked up at the 33rd Ward Office.
•  A street sweeping map and schedule can be found on the Ward Office site and now an interactive map is available at: www.33rdstreetsweeping.com.  This site allows one to click on a street and enter an e-mail address for a notice a few days before scheduled sweeping.
• A 33rd Ward resident inquired about the barrage of paper flyers / menus / pamphlets being distributed to all residences in the area.  This is a legal form of advertising and the Ward simply suggests recycling the paper.

Next meeting:  June 18, 2009.  7:00 at Horner Park Field House.
Alderman Mell’s Advisory Council meets on the third Thursday of every month.
