UWP SAYS
"Minister for Works, hypocritical"

Press Statement
September 14, 2000

General Secretary
Stephenson King

The United Workers Party notes recent statements of the Minister of Works concerning the Castries Inner City Relief Road which the United Workers Party Government planned as part of the development of the Castries/Cul-de-Sac Highway.  It was the Minister of Works, Calixte George, who described this project as a waste of time and money.

The United Workers Party must bring to the attention of the public that it was the Government’s hostility to the Cul-de-Sac Highway which led to delays in finalizing this project, and those delays in turn led to delays in progress on the Inner Relief Road Project.  It is these delays that have contributed to the crisis of traffic congestion in the City.  The UWP believes that it is hypocritical to say the least, for the Minister of Works to now pretend that this is a project initiated by the Labour Party Government.

The UWP also urges the Government to give the public the assurance that the plan now developed for reducing congestion in the City is not designed to subsidize the NIS/NIPDEC car-park which, it is widely believed, is not financially viable.
