Selected Project Accomplishments

One of the most successful projects organized by McKinley County VISTAs is the
Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.  Initialized by VISTA Laura Runyan, VITA has brought thousands of dollars of what would have been unclaimed tax dollars to low-income families in the Gallup area.  Information on the 2005 VITA Program will soon be available.

VISTA Valerie Wendell initialized a radio show on Gallup Public Radio on  "Exploring Entrepreneurism", where interviews with local entreprenuers are broadcasted each week.  The show has been continued by VISTA Lindsay Mapes and is aired each Thursday at 12:30pm.

The McKinley County Americorps * VISTAs are continuing to promote Junior Achievement in McKinley County schools in 2005.  Junior Achievement is  dedicated to educating young people in grades K-12 about business, economics, and free enterprise.

In what is a comprehensive effort to revitalize Gallup's downtown district, VISTA Stephanie Petrella has played a major role in contributing to the revitalization of the
El Morro Theater.  The theater is the home of Gallup's Heritage Day, and also is a venue for independent films, local musicians, and a variety of community events.

By volunteering as a facilitator for
Project WET, VISTA Ally Snell has helped increase water conservation curriculum for K-12 students in Gallup-McKinley Public School System.

VISTA Charlie Koehler helped mold
Gallup Trails 2010 into a sustainable organization promoting adventure tourism in the Gallup area.
