People have an inherent competitive spirit. We tend to push ourselves out of the box others set for us and prove something else. For some, it is sudden. For others, it takes a while.

On the blocks (24th SEA Games, Thailand) Meet Kendrick Lim Uy, Ken to his family and friends. He was born June 5, 1988 in a family of sports-oriented individuals. His father, Wilson, is a bowler and her mother, Kathy, is a swimmer. Thus, it is not surprising that Ken would go to such line of interest.

Like most families, they are your typical Filipino-type who have been supportive of each other and have close close ties and open communication. However, they are not actually pure Filipinos, neither have Chinese lineage only, they are 100% Chinese. On the contrary, they are every inch a Filipino as they have embraced the culture and lifestyle in the country they eventually called home.

Naturally, this looker loves Chinese food. In addition, he also loves Japanese and American food. Ken considers Chinese food the best, but whenever he eats much, he hurries off to the gym to burn all the fat (Chinese food are full of fried stuff). Like any young person, he is also into music. He is among those athletes who listens to music before one's events. However, contrary to common practice, which is listening to fast rock music, Ken listens to slow 80's music, particularly Kenny G., at the starting blocks. For him, such music calms oneself and bring down the pressure before the starting buzzer. After such event, he then celebrates with rock or Rn'B music and even to anything as long as it is good.

He considers himself hyperactive when he was kid. This is the main reason his mother pulled him to swimming at about the young age of three to four years old. During those times, he will be training during the summer months only as the rest of the year is, of course, devoted to his studies. Like any other swimmer, he started competitive swimming in the MILO Novice Meets when he was six to seven years old.

Times passed but Ken never took swimming really seriously. Many things aside from the sport actually preoccupies his young mind—or shall I say, more sports. It is a fascination for every little boy, that is why the stigma of anything with wheels (but motorbikes), did not escape Ken ever since he was seven to eight years old. He is currently a part of a car club. Ken loves pimping and fixing his ride for an upcoming drifting or drag racing competition. He is also into mountain climbing. On the safer or more relaxing side, having been to Jacksonville, Florida, where beaches thrive and "there is plenty of sunshine" (quoting Mrs. Renée Dwyer of the book, Twilight), Ken also enjoyed surfing. Lately, he is into boxing and kickboxing, and further, he is into the fastest growing sport of mixed martial arts

However, it seems like there is only one sport that never loses its charm on him—swimming. He continued to swim during his high school days at the Philippine Academy of Sakya and even went by without really making a name for himself. This is not until the year 2005. (continue...)
